MORSE CUP TO PATEA

SEVEN-A-SIDE RUGBY EVENT. NUMBER OF ENTRIES REDUCED. Lack of entries from outside clubs and a strong wind which blew throughout the afternoon robbed the Patea Rugby Football Club’s annual junior seven-a-side tournament for the Morse Cup and miniatures of a good deal of interest, there being in consequence only a moderate attendance of the public. A Patea team won. Five teams entered and provided some good football, though the standard was not as high as in past years. The final was contested by two Patea teams, the A team winning a keen contest by eight points to nil. The cup and the miniatures were presented by Mr. E- F. Hemingway, who congratulated the winning team and also the others. To revive interest in the competition, which was a valuable one, the club proposed next year to ascertain • beforehand what entries it would receive, said Mr. Hemingway. He expressed regret that Okaiawa, last year’s winner, had not entered a team. In the A team the players were T. Maule (captain), E. Cousins, S. Cousins, E. Berry, L. Johnston, F. Taylor and B. Roberts, and in the B team P. Hurley (captain), D. Bourke, C. Hunt, G. Oakley, W. . Rowlands, A. Amon and E. Hamblyn, Results were:— First Round. Patea A 20 beat Aotearoa A 0. Patea had the best of the game, tries being scored in the first spell by Roberts and S. Cousins, and in the second spell by, S. Cousins, E. Cousins, Berry and Johnston. Berry converted one try. Patea B 9 beat Manutahi o.' G. Oakley scored early for Patea, but Manutahi Jiad the better of the rest of the first spell, Penny missing an easy shot from a penalty. With the wind in the second half Patea kept Manutahi busy, Rowlands diving across from a scramble. Just before time Patea broke through, Rowlands and Hurley diving for a rolling ball together for Rowlands to score his second try. Aotearoa B a Bye. Manutahi took the field to-give Aotearoa B a game, the result being a draw, three all. T. Broughton scored for Aotearoa and Harvey for Manutahi. Semi-Final. Patea A 18 beat Aotearoa B 0. Patea took advantage of the wind and Maule soon ran round to score. Berry’s kick did not rise. Vigorous play at Patea’s twenty-five was followed by Maule getting away again, but the movement broke down. With Patea aggressive, Johnston snapped up the ball and ran round to score under the posts, Roberts converting. Ber v y shone in some good work early in the second half, but

it was Maule again who raced away to score, and convert his own try. Maule’s third try was gained well out, but Roberts added the major points. Final. Patea A 8 beat Patea B 0., The A team opened with the wind in its favour, and its first try was scored by Maule, when Taylor exploited the high kick infield from half-way. Roberts kick kept low. Taylor again kicked high, but Hunt marked and after an exchange of kicks touch was found at the B twenty-five. Several B players went upfield in a determined rush, but the spell closed without further score. The early stages of the second spell were evenly and openly contested. The A team drove well down the line and . finding several B players out of position S. Cousins broke through the defenders and scored under the posts, Roberts converting. The referees were Messrs. A. Murphy,. P. Rangi and D. Clement and the tournament was conducted by members of the club committee.
