CHANGE OF SERVICES

ANGLICAN VICAR’S PROPOSAL. EARLIER HOUR SUGGESTED. It is probable that the 11 o clock Sunday morning service at St. Mary’s Church, Hawera, will be held an hour earlier as the result of discussion at the annual meeting of parishioners. The reason for the mooted change is to allow children attending the Sunday school to obtain some idea of a full Matins service and' to allow the vicar, Carmn D. B. Malcolm, to hold services in country centres at about 11 o’clock, the popular hour. In introducing the subject Canon Malcolm said the weakest service in the church was that at 11 o’clock, an hour which, though apparently unsuitable in the town, was the most popular in the country. He suggested that an experimentaT service for 12 months should be started. A start at 9.30 gave the best results in his former parish. The 11 o’clock service was poorly attended ’by adults, but if the children went to the first half-hour of the service before’ going to Sunday school, more adults were likely to attend. A speaker suggested that the communion service, in the event of the change, should be held at 8 o clock. He was very glad the chnage had been suggested, said Mr. J. C. Smith. Too many children were growing up with little knowledge of the service. Mrs. Farquhar suggested that mothers going to communion service would find 9.30 a difficult hour. They would not be home in time to prepare breakfast, and it would be too early to give the children breakfast, before 8 o’clock..

Ten o’clock would, be a more reasonable hour, said Canon Malcolm. He did not want to destroy the valuable 8 o’clock service. The country services could start at 11.15, but though he was entitled to hold services at any hour, he would discuss the matter , with country parishioners before making a change. ; NEED FOR A CURATE. ST. MARY’S PARISH, HAWERA. Emphasising that whole-hearted endeavours should be made to secure a curate for the parish of St. Mary s, Hawera, as soon as possible, the Rev. Canon D. B. Malcolm, the vicar, told the annual meeting of' parishioners that it was impossible for one, man to serve the parish adequately. , “It is an absurdity, he declared. “Those people in the parish who are not strong adherents are drifting away from the church through lack of.a, shepherd. St. Mary’s has a country district larger than the whole of the Manaia parish. We must make up our minds to secure at the earliest moment suitable assistance in the parish.”

It was stated that the bout would be Hutchens’ last fight.as an amateur, and further, that Hutchens has long sought battle with the title-holder. Mr. R. W. Haddow was appointed referee and Messrs. H.
