SHOOTING AT ROWAN

KAPONGA RIFLE CLUB. The Kaponga Rifle Club fired on Saturday last the first of a series for the club championship and handicap championship, the handicaps being sealed until the end of the season. There was a good muster of riflemen in spite of the showery weather and some good performances were put up. The best aggregates off the rifle since the commencement of the Harrison Memorial Cup competition are A. Barker 643, L. Mellow 620, J. McCarthy 610 and R. Dempsey 609. In the buttons match Rifleman A. Barker 32, Rifleman C. Hollard 32, L. Mellow 31, D. Hollard 28, total. 123, defeated the challengers, Riflemen R. 'Heather 31, J. McCarthy 30, E. Izett 29, A. E. Jackson 28, total, 118, by five points.’ Further detailed scores are:—

serter from the British forces. The deserter is a Hessian professor of music and languages, who has been pressed into service as a foreign mercenary to fight against the rebel American colonists. Francis Lederer, as the Hessian soldier, gives a convincing portrayal of the part, his comic dismay but good-natured acceptance of the curious custom -of “bundling” (courtship in bed—with all due restrictions) being excellently done. Joan Bennett makes a lovely and piquantly provocative young Puritan, .who is an enthusiastic upholder of “bundling” —with restrictions. Her acting is flawless. As the mother and also a onetime bundler on her own account, Mary Boland scores a decided success, but it is to Charles Ruggles as the “not unreasonable” New Englander, that the palm must be given for providing the most mirth-provoking incidents of the play. The main film is preceded by an interesting and, at times, highly amusing programme of “shorts.” These include a Betty Boop cartoon, a Paramount Pictorial, a News of the World and others—all well worth seeing.

KING’S THEATRE, STRATFORD.

“THIS IS THE LIFE.”

All those who enjoy a hearty laugh should not miss “This is the Life,” which is being shown at the King’s Theatre to-night and to-morrow night. Gordon Harker and Binnie Hale are the stars of this - “laugh-a-minute” comedy which shows the effect that the inheritance of a huge fortune has on the proprietors of a lowly tea-house. Their adventures are many and varied when they decided to utilise the money to break into “society.” This is Gordon Harker’s first starring role, and through this performance definitely cements his position among England’s finest comedians. Binnie Hale, who is well known on the London stage, makes her talking debut. Jack Barty, the well-known stage comedian, and Charles Heslop have important roles in the film. Betty Astell, Ray Milland and Ben Weldon are also in the cast.

PLAZA THEATRE, STRATFORD.

“THE NIGHT IS YOUNG.” z

Two brilliant singers, Evelyn Laye and Ramon Novarro, appear for the first time together in the enchanting musical romance, “The Night is Young,” a season of which will be opened at the Plaza Theatre to-day at the matinee session. The slight but fascinating story tells of a romance between an Austrian archduke and a ballerina in the famous Imperial Ballet and is set against the light-hearted gaiety of post-war Vienna. The film should make a strong appeal to all lovers of tuneful music and they should find the singing of the two principals and the renderings by a symphony orchestra of 100 pieces a sheer delight. Another feature of this excellent picture is the clever humour of three talented comedians, Charles Butterworth, Una Merkel and Edward Everett Horton. The many songs which are introduced include “When I Grow Too Old to Dream’’ and “The Night is Young.” ' „ .
