INTEREST DECREASES

WAVERLEY RETURNED SOLDIERS. MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. Although a good credit was shown in the balance-sheet, concern was expressed at the annual meeting of the Waverley Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday that interest in the association had decreased considerably, and as the result of discussion it was decided to make more efforts in the next year. The president, Dr. P. V. Graves, was in the chair.

The president in his report said the year had been very quiet and the activities of the association were in a dormant state, owing to a considerably reduced membership and lack of interest. At present there were nine financial members.

Assistance was given to between 20 and 30 men passing through Waverley who were “down and out.” Only one local man had been assisted. There was a fair credit balance, augmented by a quota from the Canteen Fund, which it was deemed advisable to hold. The future of the association rested entirely with the support given by returned soldiers in the district. Emblems for school children had been distributed to every child in every school in the district, and 200 poppies were sold at Waverley on April 18.

The election of officers resulted:—President, Dr. P. V. Graves; vice-president, Mr. McKenzie; treasurer, Mr. Mulholland; auditor, Mr. J. C. Gray; committee, Dr. J. P. Duncan, Messrs. L. R. Nielson, C. E. Mountfort, S. C. Johnston and L. Hurley.

Votes of thanks were accorded the auditor and Miss Elmslis, of the Girls’ Club, to the latter for her assistance in the disposal of poppies this year, when all but two were sold. Appreciation of the support given by the Waverley Patriotic Association was expressed by the president. It would be a pity to see the association go out, said Dr. Dunean, who appealed for more activity on the social side. The smoke concert and dance should be retained, he considered. It was decided to hold future annual meetings of the association earlier than Anzac Day and combine them with smoke concerts. It was made a recommendation to the committee that social activities be held during the year. Mr. L. Nielson was appointed social secretary. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. ARRANGEMENTS AT MANAIA. There was a large attendance at a meeting in the Manaia Town Hall with the object of arranging celebrations for the King’s jubilee. The meeting was convened by Mr. L. C. Harrison, chairman of the Manaia Town Board. Mr. L. A. Walters presided in the absence of Mr. Harrison. Various suggestions were made and discussed. A letter was received from the Rev. H. Cottom, group-Scoutmaster, stating that the Boy Scouts intended to make a link in the chain of bon-fires throughout the Dominion.

It was decided to obtain a quote from /the Government for appropriate certificates to be issued to all school children within the Manaia town board and Waimate West County areas. Jubilee sports will be held for the children at the domain on May 6, and a procession of children in the county and town board areas will leave the town hall and march to the domain to take part in the sports. The following were appointed to marshall the procession: ■ The Rev. R. Miller, Messrs. O. T. Parry, J. Browning, J. Crompton, G. R. Watts, F. Nelson, C. Fendall, L. A. Walters, F. Mourie, W. Welham, A. H. Yarrow, J. Cosgrove, J. A. Hansen, Craigou and Major L. M. Fairbrother.

The teaching staff of the Manaia school, together with Messrs. E. Long and A. Hansen, were appointed a committee to draw up a detailed sports programme, with Mr. Marshall as secretary, to submit to the executive committee. The following were appointed a sports committee to control the children’s sports: Messrs. G. Butler, L. Hughes, E. Long, J. Miller, A. Elkington, O. T. Parry and Major Fairbrother.

Hot water will., be supplied free of charge on the grounds and each child will receive a package of lunch. The jubilee women’s committee comprising Mesdames J. Young, V. F. Winter, L. Simmons, J. Laursen, Misses M. Armitage, D. Low and B. Cassidy, with power to add, will be in charge of an open booth on the domain. The secretary was instructed to write to all school committees in the town and county inviting the children to attend the procession and sports. The executive committee is as follows: Messrs. E. Long, J. S. McKay, F. Mourie, L. C. Harrison, O. T. Parry, W. Welham, S. le Fleming, A. Elkington and M. T. Saywell. It was decided to write to the South Taranaki Power Board to make arrangements for the lighting of the town with coloured lights.

On the evening of May 6 it was decided to light a large bon-fire.

FRONTIERSMEN’S SHOOT. SCOB.ES ON HAWERA RANGE. Members of M. Squadron, Legion of Frontiersmen recently held two shoots on the long range at Hawera, a good muster taking part and spending an enjoyable time. The shooting was held under service conditions, seven shots each at 200, 300 and 500 yards being fired, the possible being 105. A changing light and gusty wind made shooting very difficult on the first day, when no big scores were registered. ■ . Following are the individual scores;—

For the second day’s shooting the light though dull was steady and a light cross wind did not greatly affect marksmanship. On this occasion better, scores were returned as under:—
