•’Ey Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. <Rec 7 p.m. Rome, April 24. Crawford and McGrath (Australia) ■defeated Borotra and Brugnon in the doubles at the international tennis tournament to-day. The Australians success came as a big surprise to the crowded stands, where it was generally thought •that coming so recently from a voyage {hey would be unable to hold the brilliant French veterans. The match was one of the _grea vest struggles ever seen in Italy. Crawford played magnificently. He kept his head and gave McGrath the requisite moral support in tie opening sets, when McGrath was off his game, seemingly beipg overwhelmed by Borotra s flashing activities. Gradually McGrath recovered his nerve and the Australians m the last three sets gave a dazzling display. Crawford’s low returns of the service perpetually had the Frenchmen worried. Even Borotrk’s dashing net play was of no avail. Further results are:— • Women’s singles:—Final: Miss Sperling defeated Mlle. Valerio 6-4, 6—l. Men’s singles:—Semi-finals: Hmes defeated Artens 6—2, 4—6, 6—3. Mixed doubles: —Quarter-finals. Hughes and Miss Dearman defeated Turnbull and Mlle. Valerio 3—6, 6—3, 6—2. The Australians concentrated on a weak link. ■. The match between Hughes and Miss ■Dearman and Turnbull and Mlle. Valerio was most interesting. Turnbull began well, but tired’after the doubles. The ■ English pair played brilliant tennis. The defeat of Turnbull and Quist by Borotra and Brugnon assured a FrenchAustralian final. Borotra was in amazing form and had a large share of the team’s victory. Quist and Turnbull, however, played fine tennis in the first set. They forced the Frenchmen into .errors Until they led s—l. Borotra and Brugnon went to 5-4, but Turnbull's brilliant service assured the set. Borotra rand Brugnon led 3—o, but the Austra- ’ Hans pulled up to 6—5. A thrilling 12th game finally went to France. The last two sets were one-sided, the French pair smashing everything in great style. The Australians looked as though they were suffering from the effects of the sea journey, but they _ should bo iat the top of their form in time for the- ; French championships.

; CHILIAN. GIRL’S SUCCESS. ‘ SCARBOROUGH TOURNAMENT. ;■ London, April 23, The finals in the Scarborough tennis tournament resulted:— Women’s singles: Miss Joan Hartigan (Australia) defeated Miss R. Smith, 6—2, 6—2. Women’s doubles: Misses Hartigan and j Lawrence defeated Miss Bullock and Mrs. Fontes 6— 4, 10—8. In the semi-final of the women’s singles at the Birmingham tournament Senorita Anita Lizana (Chile) defeated Miss Stammers (England), 6—4, 6—l. Mire Hartigan is now singles champion of both North England hardcourts . and grasscourts. • The Chilean Senorita Lizana, although only 20 and five feet in height, has a great reputation in Chile. English critics , acclaim her and declare that she re- ; sembles Madame Lenglen in cleverness. Miss Stammers, who ranked as Britain’s No. 3 player, was unable to counter Senorita Lizana’s terrific forehand and backhand drives and daring drop shots.

The critic Doust expresses the opinion that Lizana, despite the promise shewn, is insufficiently experienced to 'win the Wimbledon title this year.
