ST. PATRICK’S CELEBRATIONS. mr. b. McCarthy honoured. By’ Telegraph—Press Association. . Wellington, Last Night. The jubilee celebrations of St. Patrick’s College were commenced yester-' day with a Mass of thanksgiving at the Basilica. The celebrant was Archbishop O’Shea, who was the first student at St. Patrick’s, and the officiating priests were all old boys of St. Patrick’s. The preacher was Dr. Morkane, who spoke bn the subject of education. . The Basilica was crowded, the attendance including very many from outside Wellington. Amoiig the congratulatory messages was one from Cardinal Fuba-sbni-Biondi, cardinal prefect of propaganda at Rome, and another from Father Rieu, Superior-General of the Society of Mary, Rome. . To-day’s events in celebration of the jubilee were devoted to the memory of former students killed during the war. A solemn requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Mary of All Angels Church in the morning. Present scholars from both the Wellington and the Silver Stream colleges and about 500 old boys were present. Archbishop O’Shea and . every priest associated in the celebration of Mass were ex-students of the college. At the conclusion the parade marched to the war memorial at Bowen Street, where a wreath of bay leaves was’ deposited within the shrine. Within,the floodlit walls of St. Patrick’s College a jubilee reception was held last night. Hundreds of old boys and friends attended. Speeches were made by Archbishop O’Shea, Fathers Cullen and Hurley, Mr. B. McCarthy (Hawera), president of the Old Boys’ Association, the Hon. S. G. Smith and Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, who received a portrait of Archbishop Redwood as acting-chairman of the trustees of the National Memorial Art Gallery. Archbishop O’Shea announced that the Pope had conferred the dignity of knighthood of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great upon Mr. McCarthy.
