IMPORTANT FIXTURE

LADIES’ FOURSOMES WAIWAKAIHO NEXT WEEK

(By

“Stance.”)

The course of the New Plymouth Golf Club'at Waiwakaiho will next week be the venue of an important event in women’s golf. This is the autumn foursomes, which are under the auspicies of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union. This fixture, which ranks in importance second only, to the New Zealand women’s championships, is the most noteworthy event in the history of women’s golf in Taranaki.

The event was ihaugerated five years ago, when Mrs. Guy Williams, an outstanding figure in New Zealand women’s golf, presented two fine cups for annual competition. Entries are limited to 64 pairs of players whose combined medal handicaps must not exceed 40. All games are foursomes and played on handicap.

The competition will begin on Tuesday morning and at conclusion of the day’s play 16 pairs will remain in. The final will take place on the Thursday afternoon. The foursome is admittedly golf in its highest form, and there is no match that is more interesting and requires more thought ans judgment. The event at Waiwakaiho will without doubt provide many interesting contests and some good golf. Its venue in Taranaki will provide women golfers in the province with a unique opportunity of taking part in a national competition, and it is hoped that all players with the necessary handicap will take part. The New Plymouth club has arranged special medal and bogey matches for all those who are eliminated in the .various rounds.

The competition is a national one and open to all members of clubs throughout the Dominion who are affiliated to the Ladies’ Golf Union, and many entries are expected from prominent New Zealand players. Already two of Auckland's leading players, Mrs. J. M. Wilson and Mrs. Buttle have signified their intention of taking part, and this pair should prove capable of playing a prominent part. Mrs. Guy Williams will be partnered by Mrs. D. C. Collins, while the well known Wanganui player Mrs. Russell Grace will be paired with her daughter, Mrs. Young. The entries do not close until to-morrow, and many other well known golfers are expected to be present, including a party of six from Miramar.

The constant and thorough work on the course during the last few weeks has the links in splendid order, and with the effect of the recent rains the greens should be much improved. The New Plymouth committee are sparing no efforts to ensure the success of the fixture, and next week should be a red letter one in the history of women's golf in Taranaki.

The Eltham golfer H. P. Dale carries a very serious handicap around with him in his bag in the shape of his mashie niblick. When he takes this club out for shot it is safe to predict that the result is not going to be that for which he is hoping. The club cost him his match in the third round of the last New Zealand amateur championship against B. M. Silk and let him down with monotonous regularity at Waiwakaiho in the recent Taranaki championships. He should attach a brick to it and drop it into the centre of the largest and deepest lake in the district.
