EASTER IN CHURCHES

LARGE CONGREGATIONS. CHOIR SINGS “CRUCIFIXION.”. A Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” was sung •by the choir at St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, last night before a large congregation. Archdeacon G. H. Gavin conducted the service in conjunction with the recital. Soloists were Messrs. B. Collinge (tenor), D. Menzies, : E. W. M. Lysons and Vinnicombe (basses) ■ and Master P. West. The quartette'was sung by Miss E. Hine, Messrs. Collinge, Menzies and Master West. Mr. R. N. Renaud played the organ accompaniment. The performance was an effective one. The Three Hours service at the church was conducted by the Rev. S. R. Gardiner,. vicar of Waverley and Waitotara, and was so well attended that many latecomers were unable to find seats in the . church. The morning services were also largely attended. Special services in observance of Good Friday were also held in Holy Trinity Church, Fitzroy. Mr. G. W. G. Griffin conducted a missionary service in the evening and the Watches by the .Cross service in the afternoon. At St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Churcn special services were conducted. In the morning the Mass of the Pre-sanctified was celebrated, while in the afternoon -the Stations of the Cross was held. Though many of the choir members were .away on holiday the singing of The Crucifixion” at Whiteley Church last night was excellently done. Under the baton of Mr. R. L. Cooper and with Mr. G. H. White at the organ all members gave of their best. The soloists were Messrs.'V. E. Kerr and W. ,P. Okey. The Rev, F. Copeland conducted the service. • .-j-
