YOUNG MAN’S THEFTS

SIX MONTHS’ GAOL SENTENCE. WARNING BY THE MAGISTRATE. Raymond Hook, a young man, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft at the Opunake Police Court on Thursday and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative. Constable Clouston said ■ the first charge related to articles stolen from Bunnythorpe. When interviewed Hook admitted he had stolen the articles, consisting of four singlets, a bathing costume, a pair of underpants, a bicycle bag, a towel and a quantity of old coins of a total value of £6 3s.

The second charge was in respect of a leather coat valued at £3 10s, the property. of Hugh Reid. This was taken from the owner’s motor-cycle at Pihama on March 19. A coat of similar appearance was found in the possession of Hook, and when the constable said it corresponded with the missing article Hook admitted he had taken it as he was passing on a bicycle. He had been previously convicted for dishonesty, the first time being 10 years ago. The magistrate: You are qualifying for reformative detention for an indefinite period. If I order this it will be out of my hands to say for how long. I do not want to do so but you will probably get it if you are convicted again by me or any other magistrate. You will be sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, sentences to be cumulative. The property was ordered to be returned to the owners.
