MOKOIA SCHOOL wins banner.

GOOD WORK FROM SOVTH SCHOOLS

Mokoia school won the South Taranaki schools’ junior first aid banner as the result of competitions held recently. Despite the difficulties under which the tuition had been carried out since the departure of Sister Small from Hawera the children had evidently carried on with the work, as all the schools which entered for the competition had submitted excellent work.

The papers were set by Sister Jerviss, Health Department nurse, and were examined by Mr. W. R. ShaW, commandant of the men’s detachment of the first aid division. The practical and oral tests were carried’out by Mrs. F. C. King, honorary organiser of the Junior Red Gross.

Results are (practical, oral and written work 100 points each, total 300):— Mokoia 90, 85, 80, total 255, 85 per cent. 1 Mangatoki 90, 85, 65; 240; 80 per cent. 2 Tawhiti 79, 80, 90; 239; 79.6 per cent. 3 Te Roti 75, 80, 80; 235; 78.3 per cent. 4 Fraser Road 85, 75, 65; 225; 75 per bent. 5 Otakeho 70, 75, 75; 220; 73.3 per cent. 6 Okaiawa 70, 70, 75; 215; 71,6 per cent. 7 Eltham 71, 70, 70 ; 211; 70.3 per cent. 8 Normanby 70, 70, 65; 205; 68.3 per cent. 9 Opunake and Te Kiri entered for written work only, each receiving 65 points. The remarks of the examiners were: The practical and oral work from Mokoia was especially good. Marie Hey’s written paper was awarded 100 points. The papers were well written. Five papers from Eltham, those of Aura Mehrtens, Alison Jenkins, Laura Egarr, Doreen Pepperill and William Tippins, deserved special mention. An excellent paper by Eileen Governor, Tawhiti, was awarded 96 points, and those of Nola Brogden and Ena Epai were very good. Mavis Hewson, Opunake, sent in an outstanding paper, which was awarded full marks. The practical and oral work from Mangatoki was equal to that of the winner and deserved special mention. Fraser Road’s practical work was very good. <
