NO INCREASE LIKELY

STRATFORD BOROUGH SALARIES.

STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR.

Little hope for a general_increase in the salaries of employees of' the Stratford Borough Council, should he be returned; was held out by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, at last night’s council meeting. The Mayor had consented to nomination and, as there did not seem to be any opponent offering, and therefore little chance for him to make a statement before the election in May, he did not want a false impression about salaries to gain credence. He did not think the borough finances were in .a position to justify a general increase, though it might be that in some particular case where an employee was underpaid an increase would be warranted.

It might be said, he continued, that the money u:cd for the aerodrome site should hive bsen devoted to increasing wages and salaries. He thought the aerodrome a.good investment and if the conditions approached normal, as he. was convinced they would,, the aerodrome farm would be an excellent asset. He did not enter into the scheme' with the idea that it should cost' the ratepayers anything of account s for any length of time.
