Miss G. McMillian, 8.A., B.Sc., has been appointed first assistant at the New Plymouth Girls’ High School. She will take the place of Miss N. I. McLean, who will retire at the end of the year.

Mr. Eliot King, New Plymouth, who is suffering from a severe attack of pneumonia, is progressing as well as can be expected. His condition last night was reported to be brighter. Visitors at the New Plymouth Rotary Club luncheon yesterday were Mr. Justice Frazer, Mr. W. Cecil Prime, Auckland, and Mr. Gordon Elliott, New Plymouth.

Mrs. W. Evetts, New Plymouth, who has been dangerously ill in the New Plymouth Hospital for the past fortnight, 15 now improving., Mrs. Evetts, who is a very old resident of New Plymouth, celebrated her diamond wedding two years ago.

Miss Julia M. Wallace, M.A., Dip.Ed, was appointed last night by z the ILgh Schools Board to fill the vacancy created on the girls’ staff by the resignation of Miss M. B. Stewart. Miss E. M. Duff was given an A grade position and Miss J. Riach a B grade position.

Members of the Tikorangi branch of the Farmers’ Union at the annual meeting last night passed a vote of sympathy with Mr. H. A. Foreman in the bereavement suffered by the death of his wife. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect.

A visitor to Wellington yesterday was Mrs. C. T. Wedgwood, a great-grand-daughter of William Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand, reports the Press Association. She was with her husband, a director of the famous pottery firm, and she will visit Auckland. Major-General Sir Andrew Russell, K.C.8., K.C.M.G., president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, will be present at the New Plymouth Anzac Day services. He will take the salute at the parade in Pukekura Park in the morning, and will be the guest of honour at the gathering of ex-service-men in the afternoon.

Mr. V/. A. Brown, New Plymouth, Taranaki Swimming Centre educational officer, was farewelled before his departure on transfer ( to Dunedin, by the centre executive {at a meeting at New Plymouth last night. Mr. F. J. Eggleton, chairman, referred to the zealous work done by Mr. Brown and its excellent effect upon school swimming enthusiasm in the province.
