IMPORTANCE TO DOMINION
WORK FOUND FOR MANY PEOPLE.
MORE THAN IN MEAT AND WOOL.
VIEW ON TARIFF PUT FORWARD.
By Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, April 13.
Before leaving Wellington en route for England, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates received a communication from the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation setting out the views of manufacturers on the question of tariffs. The communication discussed the value of manufacturing goods in the Dominion, emphasising that there were more persons engaged Lu wair manufacture than the aggregate engaged in the production of'meat and wool and that it was vital to the welfare of the Dominion that these industries should be preserved. It supported British preference and said that, having regard to the recent tariff revision undertaken to comply with the terms of the Ottawa agreement, they are confident that the Government would not contemplate any further reduction of the Dominion’s basic tariff, that is her tariff on United Kingdom goods.
Mention was mad.e of the fact that the manufacturers had already advocated an increase of tariff on goods from other parts of the Empire which could be obtained from Great Britain.
