IMPROVEMENTS TO ROADS. REPORT BY THE ENGINEER. Improvements to roads in the Stratford county during the past month were reviewed in the report presented) to the council on Saturday by the engineer, Mr. J. W. Spence. ' In the north riding, he said, a small amount of stone was crushed and repairs were made to Salisbury Road between the factory and the Croydon Road junction. The Croydon Road was clay blinded. One hundred yards of river shingle was carted from the Rum Keg creek to the railway depot and 140 yards of boulders were carted from the same stream on Mr. E. Anderson’s property. The grader was run over the metalled surfaces of Denmark Terrace, Kelly Street, Radnor, Denbigh and York Roads.

In the south riding the southern end of Wingrove No. 2 Road was blinded with pit gravel, thus improving the surface generally, particularly the halfmile on which the whole of the blinding had been scoured off. The drain crossing the road in front of Mrs. Brown’s property was cleaned out and the bottom lowered. Bitumen patching was done on the Waihapa and Wingrove No. 1 Roads. General maintenance was done on the Bird, Robson, Climie, Sole, Finnerty, Cheal and Mountain Roads. Boulder and shingle were crushed at the Cornwall Road and carted to the Skinner Road bridge site for concrete work.

In the east riding the balance of Toko N0.,1 Road was sprayed with tar, blinded with pit shingle and rolled. Banking work was done on the unsealed part of the Ohura Road at Douglas and the formation was widened where necessary. General repairs were made to Makuri, Mohakau, Douglas North and South and Akama Roads and a slip on the Tunupo was cleared. In the west riding the greater part of the month was occupied in repairing flood damage. The set of concrete pipes on the Brooks Road that was carried downstream by the washout was replaced and the filling over the pipes was made, up. Six feet of 12-inch pipes were used ,in extending the culvert on Opunake No. 1 Road and the roadside was made up. A tunnel under the Cardiff Road, badly blocked with timber and debris, was cleared and a quantity of dead timber, etc., in the creek above the tunnel was removed. In several places on the road considerable scour took place on the bitumen edges but most of the metal and shingle was salvaged and replaced. Patching was done on the Waingongbro and Climie Roads and scrub and fem was cut on the Waingongorb, : Cardiff, Climie, Ronald, Finnerty, Hastings, Upper Palmer, Opunake No. 2 and Rowan Roads. In the Mangaehu riding patching was done on the Tututawa, Mangaehu Main, Tauwharenikau and Mangaotuku Roads and as much as possible of the metal scoured into the watertables was replaced on the surfaces. A bad comer on the Mangaotuku Road was cut back and the metal was surface banked up on the outside of the curve. Two small side breaks on the Mangaehu South Road and one on the Tauwharenikau Road were built up with willow breastworks and clay-filled. A washout on the Mangaehu Main Road was also attended to. The road surface on one of the hills near Puniwhakau was shaped and coated with pit shingle. On the Mangaehu North Road watertables were cleaned, the overhanging fem was cut and shingle patching was done. Watertables on the Taihore were cleaned and in some places deepened. The end of a culvert on the Puniwhakau was lifted and reset.

In the Ngatimaru riding small slips on the Matau North, South and Junction Roads , were cleared. Watertables on the Matau North, South, Mangaoapa, Mangamaire and Junction Roads were attended to. The drag-log was run over the Matau North, Junction and Mangamaire Roads.

The Stratford County Council on Saturday recorded its sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. H. Worthington, Stratford, and the late Mr. J. Thomas, Ngaere. Both men, ' said the chairman, were early councillors and their spade work had been of great benefit to the county. Sympathy was also extended to the chairman of the Whangamomona County Council, Mr. N. R. Cleland, in his illness. Mr. C. Skitrop, Puniwhakau, the new Mangaehu riding representative on the Stratford County Council, was welcomed by the chairman, Mr. T. R. Anderson, at the meeting of the council on Saturday. Mr. Skitrop won the recent by-election. GENERAL ITEMS. Garden Party Competitions. Competition winners at the Eltham Boys’ Home garden party on Thursday were Misses S. Camcross, W. Carman and Penhall. The event realised £l4, which will be handed to the home management. £8 for Mayor’s Fund.

The sum of £8 has been received for the Mayor of Eltham’s relief fund as Eltham’s share of. the latest art union. The Mayor’s fund amounts to £2B.

Council Thanked. Settlers on Croydon Road, Waipuku, wrote on Saturday thanking the chairman and councillors of the Stratford County Council for attending a meeting at Croydon Road for their advice regarding the improvement of the road. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. M Squadron, Legion of Frontiersmen, will hold an old-time ball at the Eltham town hall on Monday. Jack Hooker’s orchestra has been engaged and everything is being arranged to provide an enjoyable evening. A bus will run from Stratford and an excellent supper will be provided.
