POTATO EMBARGO
GROWERS URGE CONTINUANCE,
TARIFF PREFERRED TO QUOTA.
By Telegraph —Press Assn. —Copyright Sydney, April 13. The acting-Prime Minister, Dr. Earle Page, received a deputation of potato growers of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania to-day. The deputation requested that the embargo on New Zealand potatoes should remain. Alternatively the deputation desired an adequate duty on New Zealand potatoes, rather than any system of quotas. The deputation also discussed generally means whereby the organisation of Australian potato growers could be brought about in order to ensure the orderly marketing of their product. Tasmanian representatives submitted a comprehensive statement on the subject. Dr. Page informed the deputation of the position of negotiations with New Zealand and emphasised the difficulties so far encountered. He promised to submit the representations of the deputation to the Ministry for consideration in connection with the further negotiations shortly to be resumed with the New Zealand Government.
