Mr. Eliot King is at present seriously ill at his home, Shortland Street, New Plymouth. Mr. C. A. Boies, Mayor of Taumarunui, motored to New Plymouth on Saturday. Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., was present at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s special meeting on Saturday. Visitors to the New Plymouth races on Saturday included Messrs. D. J. Malone, president of the Stratford Racing Club, and S. C. Tonks, president of the Egmont Racing Club. Mr. J. W. Heenan, assistant Crown law daughtsman, and well known in the athletic world, has been appointed Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs in succession to Mr. Malcolm Fraser, says a Wellington Press Association message.

Captain J. E. Barrett, of the Australian Staff Coips, who is at present in New Zealand on liaison duties, arrived at New Plymouth on Friday from the Auckland district. Captain Barrett will leave this morning for Wanganui. Mr. W. H. Freeman, New Plymouth, who was recently appointed magistrate in the Southland district, was formally sworn in by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., on Saturday. Mr. Freeman will commence his duties on May 1. His headquarters will be at Invercargill. Mr. George Finlay, groundsman at Pukekura Park for the last seven and_ ahalf years, has severed his connection with the staff and on Monday was presented with a case of pipes by the superintendent, Mr. T. Horton, on behalf of the staff.

The death has occurred of Baron Cochrane, Earl of Dundonald, states a London cable. He was 85 years of age and as a young man took part in Stewart’s desert march for the relief of Khartoum and rode across the desert with the news of the death of Gordon and the fall of the city. He also served with distinction in the Boer War, being mentioned six times in dispatches and promoted to the rank of Major-General. He took a prominent part in the relief of Ladysmith. In 1921 he was special ambassador to the Peruvian centenary.
