SUCCESS OF R. BARLOW REVIEW OF THE RACING. COLOSSAL DISPLAYS FORM. Though hard ridden over most of , the last half mile Colossal finished very gamely to win the Waikawau Hurdles at New Plymouth on Saturday. He was always fairly well placed but half a mile from home ■ Beau Star was going so well, and Harvest Moon and Tudor Were also in front of him, that his chances did not look bright. However, he responded to the efforts of his rider in good style and jumping the last fence first stayed on to win by two lengths. It was the performance of a fit horse and did credit to his trainer, T. H. Fryer. Pahu. as is customary with him, was well back early and was never really Sighted until he took fifth position at the High Schopl bend. Hard ridden he made up a lot of ground to snatch second money on the post. Harvest Moon made a good showing, always being handy. He jumped well and Should be improved by the race. Beau Star showed plenty of pace and three furlongs from home was four or five lengths clear but stopped badly in the straight. Stanchion and Copey ran good races and March Alone was finishing well after being last over the first mile. Tudor, the favourite, w going particularly well in second place with half a mile to go but hit the next fence hard and dislodged his rider. This robbed the race of a lot of interest. Ngareta fell at the five furlongs and Bun Tuck refused at the same fence.

Tahurangl Wins Comfortably. Though Tahurangi was at the tail Of the field after going a furlong in the Pukekura Hack Handicap he made a forward move on entering the back stretch and was in third place passing the half mile. He followed Onewhetu into the straight and taking the leader's measure 100 yards, from the post drew out to win by two lengths. It was a smooth performance. Onewhetu made a solid effort to lead all the way. He looked like seeing it out at the distance but could not hold off the winner. Amyril ran her best race for some time and . was hanging on well at the finish. The race should improve her. Diagano was always handy and was going so well three furlongs from home that he looked likely to take a hand in the finish, but though he was close up in fourth' place at the end he was only plugging along. Ingenuity was not suited, by the going, though she was going well at the finish. A surprising amount of stipport came for Ringside, but he failed to see the distance out. Windsoreen at Last

There was considerable delay at the start of the Juvenile Hack, and the favourite Fairfax was left at the post and took no part in the race. Windsoreen also did not jump out clearly but making a fast run on the outer was showing out in front before the straight was reached. Over the final furlong she was not troubled to win by two lengths. Her success was popular as her Inglewood owner-trainer has not experienced the best of luck and this was his first success. Autumn Leaf, the first of the Mint Leafs to race, made a splendid showing. She was in front with Joy Box most of the way and faded only at the end. Joy Box had every chance. She was first out and had everything in her favour but failed to run on. Red Sand was a fair fourth ahead of Sporting Song and Chalice. The last named, who was having her first race, displayed plenty of pace for half a mile. Sporting Song showed no dash. Three-Horse Field.

Scratchings reduced the field for the Ngahuru Handicap, to three and the public installed Chief Marionette a good favourite. The winner, however, was the least fancied of the trio, the Te Awamutu horse Trishna, who was in front from start to finish. Davistock was with him from the five furlongs to the straight entrance, but though tired Trishna stayed better to win by two lengths. A mile and a quarter again proved too far for Davistock, who stopped in the straight. Chief Marionette made a poor showing, being last throughout and finishing a poor third 50 yards behind Davistock. It was not a very inspiring contest. Trishna had evidently a partiality for the New Plymouth track as he won a double on that course on his last visit at Christmas, 1933.

Merry Way Scores. Merry Way scored her first win for the season when she beat Aussie Ra narrowly 1 in the Waireka Hack Handicap. ' She was soon in front with Aussie Ra, and the pair showed the way into the straight from a bunched field, They fought' out the issue over the last furlong, • Merry Way hanging on gamely to score by half a head. This marked the second winner for/ the day trained by R. Barlow. Aussie Ra had every chance. He was in front most of the way. Merry Way headed fib ll furlong fro® home but he came again and only just failed to get up. Colossal, who had won the hurdles earlier in the day, ran a really good race, being always in the picture to finish a good third. Gowanlea ran his best race for a long time; he finished fourth. Eara, the favourite, never looked likely to win, while Chikara - faded out after going half a mile. . ... R. Barlow’s Third Winner. The New Plymouth trainer, R. Barlow, led ■in his third winner for the day when Refresher scored a head victory in the Okoari Handicap and paid a good

double-figure dividend on the place machine. He hopped out smartly and was nearest attendant to Diatomous going down the back. He tackled the leader in the straight, when in a punishing finish he scored by a hose. It was a sterling effort on the part of the old Tea Tray gelding. T. Webster on Diatbmous attempted to steal the race, opening up a four or five lengths break after gdihg three furlongs and was still clear at the straight entrance. He bored blit under pressure over the last 100 yards. The Tiger did not display his custohiary early speed but was running solidly in third place at the finish. Lady Kyra was always in the picture to finish a gbbd fourth, just in front of Orapai, Who Was finishing well after being awkwardly placed early. Mbatba fan a fair race but Rereatu and Golden Haif disappointed. The former faded out after being prominent for three furlongs, while Golden Haif showed no dash. Windsoreen Again.

Coming with a great run from about sixth position at the turn Windsoreen scored her second Win of the day when she beat Gold Mission home in the Rotokare Hack Handicap. Despite her win earlier in the day she was comparatively neglected in the betting and paid a dividend of over a score on the straight-out machine. Gold Mission was also well back early but had moved up into a handy position at the turn and looked all over a winner ■ until Windsoreen came on the scene. Kurapae was always well placed. He was second into the straight but could not go on with it. Lady Eka displayed plenty of speed and was four lengths clear at the High School bend. However, she was done with as soon as the straight was reached, Passing Fancy ran a good race. Friesland had his chances extinguished at the start, being hopelessly left.
