WAIREKA TENNIS CLUB

OMATA DISTRICT NEWS. The annual meeting of the Waireka Tennis Club was held on Monday night, Mr. B. C. Kurth presiding over an attendance of 21. The chairman congratulated the club on the sound, financial position it was in, .there being a satisfactory credit balance, while the courts were free of debt and were in first-class order. Several matches were played with neighbouring clubs during the year and it was hoped to arrange more such matches during . the coming year. In thanking all who had assisted the club during the: year- the chairman made special mention of the assistance given by Mrs. L. A. McHardie and Mrs. E. R. Bayly. He also referred to the splendid work of the secretary, Mr. McHardie. Considerable discussion took place as to the advisability of playing ladder matches, it being finally decided to commence them. It was decided to increase the subscription fees to supply balls for matches. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr. D. Penwarden; president, Mr; E. Andrews; five vice-presidents; secretary, Mr. L. A. McHardie; auditor, Mr. E. Andrews; club captain, Mr. W. Sanger; vice-captain, Mr.- L. A. McHaidie, selection committee, Messrs. W. Sangei,

J. Bayly and L. A. McHardie; executive, E. Andrews, L. A. McHardie, B. C. Kurth, J. Bayly' and W. Sanger; women’s committee, Mesdames McHardie, Andrews, Kurth, Nelson, P. H. Mace, Misses C. Kendall, C. Stanton, D. Hodges and J. McHardie, with power to add. The tennis club’s challenge to the cricket, club for a cricket match has been accepted and the game will be played this-week-end.

A working bee was held at the hall on Monday, when the grounds were cleaned up. Thanks were accorded Mrs. E. R. Bayly and Mrs. A. J. Luxton for supplying afternoon tea to the workers. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Penwarden have motored to Wellington for a holiday. Mrs. Kurth .sen. is spending a few days with friends at Stratford.
