VIEWS ON CURRENT TOPICS EPSTEIN’S STATUE OF CHRIST. OPINIONS OF CORRESPONDENTS. ' ’ , • • -- ■ (To the Editor.) 'Sir,—Epstein’s 'statue of Christ must seem to many an insulting caricature of a great reformer and one of the sculptor’s own race. Some of the pictures of Christ depict a kind and happy face, sometimes with a pained, worried look, and often lacking in strength. The crucifix reminds one of, but does not represent, the-glorious spiritual body, and it •is a question if any of our representations of the man Christ are correct. The writer considers that the. human body was finished with, that the living spirit spread .amongst the people, and that you cannot make an image of that spirit “the kingdom of heaven within you.” But as there was war in heaven so there are two contesting spirits in mankind; And judging from the third chapter of St. John the second coming of Christ is to be spiritual,- and no man can make an image of or caricature a spirit firmly established in mankind.—l am, etc., .
