POPPY DAY APPEAL

REMEMBERING THE GREAT WAR. £395 TAKEN IN NORTH TARANAKI. Poppy Day, the one day when all New Zealanders are called upon to remember and acknowledge the sacrifices made by their countrymen in the Great War, always meets wtih an excellent response. This year Taranaki showed no change in spirit. Everywhere the red flowers worn by men, women and children gave an encouraging indication of the amount of financial assistance from which ex-servicemen now in need of it would benefit. Last night the money in hand totalled £315, excluding £29 Is from Waitara and £5l 10s taken at the mart, making the whole amount £395 Ils. The various schools contributed £2B 8s sd, of which the Boys’ High School was responsible for £l7 5s sd, about £7 more than last year. Many of the country returns, including Inglewood which will make its appeal to-day, are yet to come and it is anticipated that the final amount will be at least £500., Poppy Day last year produced record results, the workers collecting £556 throughout North Taranaki.

As usual this year organisation was excellent. An intensive system of house-to-house and street collection at New Plymouth produced gbod results, while in North Taranaki the appeal extended from Mokau to Rahotu along the coast and to Tariki inland. Ten thousand poppies were issued, 2000 more than in last April. At New Plymouth, the rooms of the Taranaki Women’s Club were lent as headquarters, and from there Mrs. J. C. Nicholson, aided by a strong committee, organised the appeal. She was assisted by Mesdames L. R. Curtis, G. E. Cartwright, T. P. Anderson and-S. F. Burgess. The recording of the returns was done by, Mesdames E. J. Reid, D. Le>C. Morgan, F. Chapman, Miss J. Ramson and Mr. G. H. Hutton. Mesdames F. Hartnell and T. G. Thomson were in charge of refreshment arrangements for collectors.

In conjunction with the general collection a mart, conducted by Mrs. C. Linwood, was held in Devon Street. The staff of helpers spent a busy day receiving numerous donations, arranging them on the stalls and selling them. Vegetables, meat, cakes, jams, pickles and flowers were well displayed, the stalls being ingeniously arranged l in the rather restricted space. The following were in charge of the stalls: Meat, Mesdames J. Johnston, B. Twomey, W. Middleton; cake, Mesdames G. Neal, Hunt. McCrae; vegetables, Mesdames W. H. Woodward and J. H. Sheat; jams and pickles, Mesdames A. E. Conway, F. S. Varnham and C. Linwood; flowers, Miss B. List and Mrs. G, F. Rich. The following donations were received: Mrs. D. Blackley £2. Mrs. Campbell £l, Mrs. E. J. Reid £l, Dr. E. A. Walker £l, Rotary Club £2 2s, Dr. G. Home £2 2s, Round Table £1 Is, Friendly Societies £1 Is. The results of various competitions are:—
