TARANAKI RACES TO-DAY

■ FINE FIELDS IN MOST.' EVENTS

NGAHURU VERY PROMISING CONTEST

CHIEF MARIONETTE FANCIED RUNNER - (By “Hurry On.”) , /Jj'HE .Taranaki Jockey Club’s extra meeting on the. New Plymouth racecourse to-day has attracted .splendid fields. Practically every horse in training in the Taranaki province is engaged, and the presence of several weir performed visitors should: ensure the success of the gathering. The Okoari HanV dicap in particular has drawn an exceptionally, good field; one that would do credit to any metropolitan club.' All the events ' have filled well, and the sporting fraternity of the province will be treated to a fine bill of fare. The course, which dried up wonderfully in yesterday’s sunshine and wind, should be in ; splendid order, with the sting just out of the ground.

Proceedings will commence at 12.45 with the WAIKAWAU HURDLES. ' 2c Of £lOO. About IJ miles and 100 yards. ” Tudor 11 8. • Reau Star 9 0 Pahu 10 7 Ncarerta 9 0 March Alone 10 . 0 Gowanlea' 9 0 Stanchion 10 2 r "P e >’ , 9 0 Colossal 9 6 Bun Tuck 9 0 Harvest Moon 9 3' The presence of rudor, who has an unbeaten: record over hurdles and country, will' create great interest here. He , ran well on the flat at the Awapuni meeting and appeared in great order yesterday morning. Pahu is a solid horse, especially'- when the' going is soft, but he may need a race. Bun Tuck will be coupled with Pahu on the machine. March Alone would be dangerous if anything should make the pace, as he needs ' a solidly run race before he will give ’ his best. Stanchion will be all the better'for a race, but Colossal is a fit and improving horse. Harvest • Moon has schooled well' at Hawera, but may need more experience. None of the others make much appeal, though Beau Star ' ran a fair race-at Opunake. The popular "‘selections may be - TUDOR COLOSSAL MARCH ALONE 1.25— ' PUKEKURA HACK HANDICAP. • Of £lOO. Nine furlongs. Diagano 8 3 Kurapao 8 1 Afflyril . 8 2 Ingenuity 8 0 Tahurangi 8 2 Kaola 7 o Onewhetu 8 1 . Ringside 7 a Diagano may find this distance too great, and the same may also apply to Amyril, who has not had a race for some time. .Tahurangi, who has been, working freely, would have friends if started here, but he may be reserved for the Ngahuru Handicap. Onewhetu’s recent form has >• beep disappointing and Kurapae on the same mark makes more appeal. This son of Musketoon has been racing most consistently on the Auckland country ' circuit. Ingenuity’s great finish into sec- . end place behind Sunee in the final event at Awapuni points strongly to her chances here. Kaola was a runner at that-meeting and he has worked soundly since his arrival. Ringside shapes like • a stayer and would be a possibility if started here. Joy Box is- speedy but not reliable. Still, there was merit in her second to Hororata in February. Red Sand shaped well at Opunake, while Sporting Song would only have to reproduce., his track work to have a good chance. ' Windscreen showed plenty of pace at Trentham for five furlongs, and She looked well on Thursday morning. * Autumn Leaf has been pleasing' track watchers at Hawera. Puroto and Chalice are well enough bred but may need more experience. In the possible absence of Friesland the best supported may be FAIRFAX JOY BOX RED. SAND • ■ ■i.45y . .NGAHURU HANDICAP. Of £l4O. ' 8 0 Though the death of Illuminate and - the scratching of Cereal reduce this field b to six runners, there is plenty of material for'a fine contest Aga Khan and Chief Marionette, the topweights, both won at Te Rapa , last month. Aga Khan, however,’ does not appear to be able to produce His best at New Plymouth. Chief • Marionette was off colour early in the week ; but galloped really well yesterday 'morning. Run, who won a double in ■great style at Awapuni, has gone the right way since then. He should strip ' fit horse to-day. Davistock failed at Awapuni but no fault can be found with his’ condition, and he us- ally races well on his home track. Trishna won a double at New Plymouth on. his last visit but ■ his form in the interval has been very ordinary.. Tahurangi made a fair snowing over this distance in the Opunake Cup. The favourites may be '-• 'CHIEF. MARIONETTE Y ’ RURI 3.25— ■ WAIREKA HACK HANDICAP. Of £.lOO. About seven furlongs. ■ Diagano 8 8 Ohlkara 7 10 Onewhetu 8 5 S?”? 3 !? 0 - 7 7 Kara 8 5 £ anloff . They can. both run out a good seven furlongs. Ears is. improving, as her efforts at Hawera and Opunake indicated. Gold Mis- . sion ! s fine finish in the final event at

Opunake suggested that an extra furlong would riot, trouble her. Chikara also ran a solid race at Opunake after receiving anything. but . the best of the start. If started here Merry Way would haVe admirers. > Fanloff appeals more than Ringside, who has his full share of weight. This distance may prove too short for Aussie Ra, . though file long run down the back from the'seven furlongs post should enable him to find his feet without undue bustling. Those to find favour may. include GOLD MISSION AUSSIE RA . ' ■:■■■ ■■■ ONEWHETU ' 4.5- - ■■■ ' OKOARI HANDICAP. , Of £l2O. Six furlongs. Diatoir.ous 9 0 Lady Kyra 7 8 Golden Hair 8.12 . Diatomous failed at Trentham iri January but he galloped, well oyer' half a mije yesterday morning. ■ Nevertheless he may find it hard to concede weight to Golden Hair, whose recent efforts on the track suggest that she is back to her best form. Rerepai will not be.a starter, but the other members of the Boles bracket, Rereatu, will take his place in the field. He ran two good races at Awapuni and looks particularly well. Orapai, who, has not raced since, last September, may not be quite ready, though -h& .would have a chance on a wet? track. ‘>tady Kyra has worked attractively* during the last two weeks, while The Tiger showed all his old pace over"!five furlongs, on Wed- : nesday. Refresher also showed up. favourably in a gallop with Merry . Way on Thursday morning. Mbatoa is honest' but the class here, is rather above him. If reserved Friesland' will have a big following. He is quite at home on a damp track and his recent’efforts at Hawera have been attractive. -Merry Way and Gold Mission are a likely pair, and Chikara and Panloff were-placed oyer this distance at Hawera. Passing Fancy is improving and Windscreen will not be without prospects. The best backed may be ■ > FRIESLAND - GOLD MISSION MERRY WAY ■
