SIX MAY RETIRE

HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCILLORS.

MR. VEALE NEW CANDIDATE.

A deputation of citizens spent most of yesterday morning interviewing a number of well-known Hawera business men with a request that they accept nomination for positions on the Hawera Borough Council. As a result, three candidates, two sitting members, are definitely in the field, and three more are considering the requests. The council comprises nine members. The deputation comprised Messrs. F. W. Horner, S. A. Chisholm, R. Mortlock, L. H. Clapham, E. Dixon, and B. C. Bennett. It waited on a number of business men, including several of the present council, and replies that they would definitely stand were received from Messrs. A. Reid and L. H. Clapham, sitting members, and Mr. P. O. Veale, who has not previously been a candidate at local body elections. Mr. W. G. Strange, a sitting member, is reconsidering his previous decision not to stand, it is understood, and Messrs. D. G. Smart and J. C. Smith are considering the request of the deputation.

A number of citizens approached by the deputation definitely decided not to stand, giving as their reasons business and other associations which would prevent them giving adequate time to the affairs of the council. Members of the present council who are unlikely to stand are Messrs. W. J. Bright, E. K. Cameron, A. K. North, R. M. Rickard, W. R. Butler and W. G. Walkley. So far as the Mayoralty is concerned it is considered unlikely that anyone will oppose the present Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbel], who had at first intended not to stand, changing his /intentions in response to a very large deputation.

It is understood that among those interviewed, Messrs. D. McCormick, E. H. Harrop, and S. A. Chisholm indicated that they would not be available.
