BITTER CAMPAIGN

DRIVE AGAINST THE REDS

WAR IN TWO PROVINCES

NOTORIOUS LEADER DEAD

CAPTORS OF MISSIONARIES

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 11.25 p.m. ' Shanghai, April 12. Chiang-Kai-Shek is to-day waging a bitter and most difficult anti-Red campaign against the remnants of the forces which are operating in the provinces of Kweichow and Hunan under the notorious leader Holung and directed by Soviet agents. All efforts to engage in a decisive battle have been futile since the Reds are continually moving through the mountainous territory. However, Marshal Chiang’s forces drove the attacking force towards Szechwan, several heavy engagements resulting in the death of the notorious leader Chutes, whose troops were responsible for the capture of the missionaries Messrs. A. Hayman (New Zealand) and Mr. Bosshardt • (a Swiss), whose fate is still unknown. So long as the Reds continue their dodging tactics there is little possibility of a quick termination of the present campaign.
