STOCK DEMONSTRATIONS

KEEN INTEREST AT OPUNAKE. On Wednesday there was a good attendance of farmers at the Opunake saleyards when demonstrations on stock were given. In the morning Mr. C. _H. Sorrensen gave a lecture-demonstration on pigs. The subject was treated from an export production view, the type of pig required, feeding, treatment and handling. Animals demonstrating the most important points were handled by Mr. Sorrensen. At the conclusion, Mr. J. S. Tosland, who had charge of the organising, in moving a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Sorrensen, said they were particularly fortunate in geeting so capable a demonstration. In the afternoon Mt. G. H. Bell demonstrated the salient points of the dairy cow. Treating the subject on the five principal points—type, constitution, capacity, production and temperament. Mr. Bell prefaced his demonstration by stating that farmers could have an ideal type of cow, up to the best standard of production, but it was absolutely necessary to have the salient points backed up by testing, the only positive evidence as to the value in butter-fat and casein content.

Mr. W. A. Sheat introduced the speaker and moved a hearty vote of thanks. The Farmers’ Union was fortunate in securing the services of capable demonstrators. Both demonstrators said they were pleased to assist in creating interest in subjects that were so vital to the farmers and the Dominion. Everyone, who could assist their fellowmen, said Mr. Bell, should do so. Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. Shepherd, Tosland, Cathie, Young and others, in providing the animals and in other ways assisting to make the demonstration interesting and instructive. The Women’s Division catered for morning and afternoon teas.
