THRILLING TUG-OF-WAR.

KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED.

Thrilling sport characterised the tug-of-war contests conducted at the Workers’ Social Hall, ' New Plymouth, last night in conjunction with the New Plymouth Labour Party’s bazaar. The bazaar was open throughout yesterday, and fair business,was done in the afternoon. In the evening there was a large attendance, and stallholders did brisk business. The tug-of-war events created considerable interest and were interspersed with musical and vocal items by the Royal Maori String Band and a party of Maori artists, . Rain prevented some of the teams nominated from attending, but this did not lessen the interest in the fine pulls that were held. Three teams, Haupoto (three lives), Oaonui (one life) and Diamonds (one life) remain in, and will pull. The other teams nominated will pull in another section, the winner to pull against the finalist of the three teams left in after last night’s contests. The organisation of the tug-of-war events was /done by Messrs. R. Fulton, R. Cogar, W. Falconer and S. Flood; Mr. J. Power was starter and judge and Mr. Flood timekeeper.’

Results of last night’s pulls are:— Haupoto (R. Dawson (captain), L. Castles, A. Looney, S. Hopkins, E. Eustace, and W. Goodin) 54st 81b beat Oaonui (J. Mitchell (captain), Tai Ngaia, W. Mitchell, L. Johnson, J. Zurcher, G. Davies) 54st 121 b. This was a highly exciting pull, the lights changing considerably. On the call of time Haupoto, giving of its best, gained and secured an inch for a win. Diamonds (J. Yates (captain), C. Stevens, • T. Withers, B. Hickland, C. Haskell, K. Haskell) 54st 101 b beat West End (E. O’Dea (captain), H. Lawrence, J. McKay, R. McLeod, A. Terrill, T. Sharland) 54st 81b. Diamonds gained a half-inch advantage from the start and was always in front, finally winning by two inches.

Oaonui beat West End. The excitement was intense. West End held the advantage for two minutes, but Oaonui wore the opposition down and won by two inches. ■, •

Haupoto beat Diamonds. Diamonds took control from the start and appeared to be winning when, with but 15 seconds to go, two; of its men changed hands and Haupoto, quick,, to take advantage, gained a win by two inches. To-day a baby show will be held, the judges being Dr. D. E. Brown and Mrs. Brown. To-night a Scottish concert will be presented. On Saturday night the finals of the tug-of-war will be held and will be followed by an impromptu dance. ? . •
