DRIVE FOR INTEREST

' TARANAKI ALPINE CLUB.

ACTIVE PAST YEAR REVIEWED.

A strong drive to popularise mountain sports among young people in North Taranaki will be made by the Taranaki Alpine Club in the coming season. It is probable that as the result of a recommendation to the committee from last night’s annual meeting of the dub at New Plymouth competitions in mountain craft will be organised for club members this winter and.,a proportion of outings conducted by club leaders will be open to the public. Commenting on the annual report of the club, already published, the president, Mr. W. H. Moyes, congratulated members on the work done during the year, particularly in regard ,to the erection of the new hut at Humphries Cas- > tie, which would undoubtedly, he said, A assist the club activities. Reference had been made in the report to an apparent falling off in interest during the year, but he was convinced that it was merely a passing phase, instanced largely by difficult times.

Members discussed details of club management and organisation fully and reference was made to apparent incompleteness in arrangements made for certain club trips. It was suggested that the difficulty might be overcome by the leader attending the club rooms on the Friday night before the trip was scheduled to take place. A suggestion that more public interest in mountain work might be stimulated by the provision of two public trips each year was also favoured.

Mr. T. Wright reported on the progress of the Humphries Castle hut and estimated the total cost to the club at £9O. The roof had been erected, he said, and comparatively little work remained to be done. As a. mark of appreciation of their valuable services in the work two young builders, Messrs. Hartnell' and Dickie, were appointed honorary active members of the club for the current year and given free transport on any club trip during that period. It was decided to leave the naming of the hut to the discretion of the committee.

A vote of thanks was accorded Messrs. Blennerhasset for interest in and assistance with club work during the year. Officers elected were:—Patron, Mr. W. C. Weston; president, Mr. W. H. Moyes; vice-president, Messrs. F. Amoore, J. Power and W. H. Skinner; club captain, Mr. R. Whitwell; secretary, Mr. W. Groombridge; treasurer, Mr. T. Wright; auditor, Mr. W. S. Thompson; committee, Mrs. Ellis, Misses E. Griffin, L. Dalefield, Messrs. S. Anchor, L. Lovell, N. Lealand, I. Aylward, K. Tompkins; social committee, Mrs. Ellis, Misses Smith, M. Hayion and R. Whiting, Messrs. C. Johnston, I. R. Wood and B. Stephenson. /
