CREDIT BALANCE
OHURA COUNTY FINANCE. IMPROVEMENT IN POSITION. .' \ The Ohura county finances are in a very satisfactory position, the first meeting of the new year disclosing a credit balance of £9ll. That is in. marked contrast to the position in the past few years, when the council has started its new year with a debit balance and sometimes a substantial one. It is stated to be 10 years since the position has been so satisfactory. The sound position is due to the fact that the rates have come in fairly well, 80.2 per cent, of the amount struck having been collected, and to the care exercised by the council in the matter of expenditure. The Matiere riding is in the best position as regards payment of rates, the ratepayers having met 84.8 per cent., while the Ohura riding ratepayers have met 77.4 per cent, of their rates. The chairman, Cr. J. Caird, said at the meeting on Wednesday that the financial position disclosed, a credit of £9ll after all payments had been met, was very satisfactory, and members agreed, but it was also felt that despite the sound position it would still be necessary for the council to exercise prudence in its expenditure. The statement submitted by the clerk (Mr. J. F. McClenaghan) showed that on April'l, 1935, there was a credit balance Of £1516. Since then £1199 had been expended, but subsidies totalling £594 were due, leaving a credit balance of £9ll. 1
The position regarding the rates showed that £4576 had been struck in the Matiere riding and £3BBl had been collected, leaving £695 Outstanding. In the Ohura riding £5133 had been struck and £3974 collected, leaving £1159 outstanding. During the year 1934-35 £1459 had been expended in the Matiere riding and £lOO6 in the Ohura riding.
