SPORTS AT WAITARA

DOMINION CYCLE TITLE J. FOOTE, N.P., AVINS TWO MILES. RUNNING, CYCLING, CHOPPING. f ' ' The main event on the programme for the Waitara annual sports yesterday was the race for the two miles professional cycling championship of New Zealand. After an excellently-judged t-ace J. Foote, New Plymouth, won by a safe margin from C. 'Parker-, New Plymouth. There was a full programme of cycling, running, chopping and Highland dancing events and all being held under a dry sky. There -was an. excellent attendance and the organisation was splendid. , . f There were five open cycle events tor which riders were present from Otorohanga and Te Aroha. Honours were evenly divided, Foote, T. Haw, H. Eva and C. Burke (New Plymouth) and B. Willoughby (Te Aroha) each winning a race. L. Pittams (Stratford) secured two second places, C. Parker a second and third, and L. Stevens (New Plymouth) two seconds and a third. A. Griffiths and C. F. Dowsett (Auckland) were prominent competitors in the foot races. The five events, as in the cycling, were all won by different athletes, C. Wilson (Waitara) winning Jthe 120 yards Sheffield handicap, Griffiths the 220 yards, H. Hook (New Plymouth) the 440 yards, W. J. Wells (Ratapiko) the half-mile and A. Lowe (Waitara) the mile. G. Tuffery (New Plymouth) was second in both half-mile and mile events. J. B. Turner, an Australian axeman, was a prominent competitor in the chopping events, in which honours were equally well divided. For the Highland dancing events, Mr. Andrew Weir, was judge, Mr. A. S. Kirkland piper and Mr. W. Johnston steward. Luncheon and afternoon tea was provided on the ground by a women’s committee. Results are:— Cycling Events. Two-mile New Zealand championship (first championship ribbon and £3 3s, second £1 Is, lap prizes 2s 6d): J. Foote 1, C. Parker 2, L. Wood 3, L. Stevens 4; time, 5m 5 3-ss. T. Haw took six lap prizes and L. Wood one. Haw took the first three lap prizes from Foote, Parker and Burke. C. Pittams withdrew and Haw took the fourth lap in spite of a challenge from L. Pittams and held him off again for the fifth lap. The position was the same for the sixth lap with Foote, Burke and Parker next. Wood took the lead at the start of the last lap from Foote and Parker. Parker chased Wood. Foote came through on the inside to win by a length. Half-mile open cycle handicap (first £3, second £l, third 10s):—First heat: T. Haw (30yds) 1, C. Burke (10yds) 2, C. Parker (scr) 3; time, Im 8 3-ss. Secfond heat: L. Reeve (60yds) 1, C. Pittams (50yds) 2, N. Bennett (50yds) 3; time, Im 9 4-ss. D. Coleman, who rode into a place and fell as he passed the winning post, was disqualified for coming inside the pegs entering the straight. Third heat: L. Stevens (40yds) 1, B. Willoughby (45yds) 2, F. L. Belk (50yds) 3; time, lm 8 l-ss. Final: T. Haw 1, L. Stevens 2, C. Parker 3; time, lm 9 l-ss. Belk, C. Pittams and Reeve led? the first time round. Burke and Parker came up in the back straight but T. Haw had broken out in front and neither Stevens nor Parker could catch him. V

One-mile open cycle (first £5, second £2, third £l):—First heat: J. Foote (scr) 1, T. Haw (30yds) 2, C. Parker (scr) 3; time, 2m 33 2-ss. The limit men set a slow pace, enabling the scratch ridei*s to catch them in the first lap. Belk took the lead for the third lap and half-way round the final lap the scratch men took charge. Willoughby and Belk crashed 200yds from the finish and L. Stevens after- the race was over. Second heat: H. Eva (60yds) 1, L. Pittams (70yds) 2, L. Reeve (120yds) 3; time, 2m 30 l-ss. The field closed up early and the last lap found Standing, L. Pittams and* Eva leading. Eva shot through on the inside for an easy win. Final: Eva 1, L. Pittams 2, Reeve 3; time, 2m 295. Reeve. C. Pittams and Standing led for the first lap and Standing led a bunch comprising the whole field over the second.lap. Standing and Stevens led the third lap, leaving the back markers. Eva came- up at the last half ,a length ahead of L. Pittams.

Two-mile Waitara wheel race (first £7, second £2, third £l):—First heat: L. Pittams (150yds) 1, C. Burke (50yds) 2, B. Willoughby (140yds) 3, L. Stevens (120yds) 4; time, 5m 11 l-ss. Burke and Haw caught' the limit man after three laps, and the six men took a slow lap, allowing the scratch men to catch them inside the mile. Foote dropped out as Willoughby took the lead from Haw and the pace slackened. Standing made a burst with a lap and a-half to go and Pittams followed. Coming into the straight, Parker tried to get through on the inside 100yds from the post when lying third, but crashed, Burke coming in front, to take second place from Pittams. Second heat: T. Hookham (200 yds) 1, G. Stevens (200yds) 2, C. Pittams (200yds) 3, D. Coleman. (140yds) 4; time, 5m 15s. The seven starters were bunched after a lap and a-half and the pace was slow. Hookham and Coleman went to the front with half a mile to go, Belk took the lead for a time and then Hookham led again. G. Stevens challenged in the straight, but was beaten by half a wheel. Final: B. Willoughby 1, L. Pittams 2, L. Stevens 3; time, 5m 225. Burke on 50yds was virtual scratch man and gave the nearest man, L. Stevens, 70 yds. He caught the field w-ith five laps to go and thereafter the riders were bunched. Hookham’s wheel was scraping and as the last lap commenced L. Pittams and Willoughby led. Willoughby shot to the front and won by 10yds, with L. Pittams second, L. Stevens third and C. Burke, who was shut in, fourth, all bunched.

Three miles cycle handicap (first £4, second 30s, third 10s): C. Burke (60yds) 1, L. Stevens (150yds) 2, G. Parker (180

yds) 3; time, 7m 42 3-ss. Foote dropped out early, leaving Parker alone, and the other scratch man soon withdrew. Coleman retired and C. Pittams brought down Wood. The field was bunched after a mile and L. Pittams and Willoughby shared the lead for the next mile. W. Ashman shot out with three laps to go and Haw crashed. G. Parker and l Belk joined Ashman and then Eva and Burke came up. Burke went to the front with L. Stevens in the last lap and the position was unchanged in the straight. One-mile maiden cycle handicap ■ (first £l, second ss): L. Reeve (scr) 1, T. Hornei- (20yds) 2, L. Crow (90yds) 3; time, lm 8 3-ss. One-mile boys’ cycle handicap: Pepperell (100yds) 1, L. Hook (40yds) 1, R. E. Till (50yds) g, A. Griffiths (30yds) 3; time, 46 4-ss. Freethey and Griffiths got up with the field at the 300yds mark, but Hook and Till wer-> too hard for Griffiths to catch. Hook won by two yards, with Till five yards ahead of Griffiths. 880 yards handicap (first £3, second '£l, third 10s): W. J. Wells (45yds) 1, G. Tuffery (60yds) 2, A. Lowe (40yds) 3. • Till and Lowe led the first time round, and. Till after making a break was caught again by Lowe and Griffiths. Wells and Tuffery came up in the straight for Wells to run home 10 yards ahead. Lowe was third.

One-mile handicap (first £3, second £l, third 10s): A. Low (30yds) 1, G. Tuffery (50yds) 2, W. J. Wells (30yds) 3; time, 4m 29 l-ss. Low and Wells came up fast in the first lap and Till fell well behind Tuffery and Plucke. S. Keith, on the limit, tired after two laps and the field closed up at the three-quarter mile. When the pace was put on Plucke fell back and the other three staged a thrilling race .over the final 220 yards. Lowe stuck doggedly to the lead, with Wells, Taranaki mile 'champion, on his heels. Tuffery was behind the two and the three moved as one man to the tape, where Tuffery beat Wells by inches for second place. It was one of the best races seen in Taranaki .this year. 120 yards maiden race (first £l, second ss): R. Till 1, H. Stimpson 2, J. Collingwood 3; time, 13 4-ss. Chopping Events.
