THE RIVERSIDE CLUB
ALL CLIFTON MEN IN TOWN
The bugbear of the Clifton club in past seasons has been the great difficulty in collecting the members of the*"team from the surrounding districts for • concerted training, with' consequently ragged play on- the field. This year the whole team, except for one man, is within two or three miles of Waitara. The three selectors and coaches, George Bennett, Charlie Brown and Arthur Collins, mean to have Clifton hard at at it in gymnasium and playing field all the year in the hope of bringing the team back to the standard of 10 to 15 years ago.
The forwards remaining from last year are a solid enough foundation for any team—“ Gerry” Fowler and Armstrong, both Taranaki front row men, Frank Olsson and Fred Calgher. The pack has lost Peter Kawe, the old stalwart. Broughton, who has gone away, Oxenham, playing for the newly formed Uruti club, and Brown. In their places are available a solid junior pack, of which the most likely at present are Tale and Longstaff, both husky lads from Brixton.
Arthur Collins will, of course, be the last line of defence, and Tui Fenton, third grade half at the beginning of last season, holds the position ' he played himself into in the senior team. Alan Sutton, first five-eighth of five years ago, who retired because of knee injuries, will be back again after an untroubled season in the juniors, vying for his place with Herbert. Simonsen, that man of representative possibilities, is the only player from out
of town, but in the little second fiveeighth Clifton has a back to be made full use of. Lawton, Wilson and Roy Jones are available again, but the team will feel the loss of Rangi Niwa, exTe Aute and Taranaki Maori representative. In his place on the wing will be Scott, a promising three-quarter- who last year played for the Marist senior B teaim at Auckland. The Clifton coaches and selectors have made their watchword this season “training,” and a Clifton team that is well-trained will be a match for anything in the province.
