WAITARA BOROUGH

IMPROVING “POUND CORNER.”

USE OF FOOTBALL GROUND.

Approval of specifications for the improvement of the Pound Corner on the Main North Road north of Waitara was given by the Waitara Borough Council last night. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. J. Hine) and Crs. T. Wilson, H. Wakely, W. Middleton, W. J. Reeves, W. B. Glasgow and H. Spurdie. That a; portion of a lane recently formed in Broadway be-made passable for bicycles was a request received from a ratepayer. The Mayor stated that it was impossible to do everything at once, and the letter was received. The Fire Board asked that the condition of several fire plugs in the borough be improved. Some of the plugs were rusted in and some were almost covered over.

The Mayor suggested that a periodical inspection should be made by the waterworks overseer. It was decided that this should be done.

A request was received for a street light at the comer, of McLean and Strange Streets. The application was referred to. the electric light committee, with power to act. The council approved of plans and specifications involving the expenditure of £162 12s 6d for the improvement of the Pound Comer on the main highway.

The foreman (Mr. W. Trim) reported that the staff had metalled and tar-sealed North Street. Relief workers had cut blackberry and gorse at Nelson Park and at the school, had quarried metal, and had done work at the seaside. A fire plug had been installed at Camp Reserve, reported the waterworks overseer. • Three building permits and six motor drivers’ licenses were issued.

Transfers of £25 each to the cemetery account and the"' Domain Board were; approved. <■/ . The Mayor thanked the councillors for the generous support accorded him since the last election. The borough was to be congratulated on the state of its affairs, he said. He would like to see all councillors stand for election - again. He had decided to accept nomination as Mayor again, although it would be for the last time. Mr. Hine expressed special thanks to the deputy-Mayor, Cr. Glasgow, for his assistance. He hoped the councillors would have the renewed confidence of the ratepayers. Crs. Glasgow, Spurdie and Middleton replied. Cr. Wilson, in announcing his intention to retire owing to pressure of private business, expressed appreciation of the manner in which the council's business Was conducted. The council ■ then sat as the Domain Board. The use of the Camp Reserve ground on Saturday was granted to the Clifton Football Club for a match against a New Plymouth team. It was decided to erect a ticket box at the lower gate to the ground. The Waitara Hockey Club was granted the use ; of the ground as required, the board reserving the right of withholding the ground for any Thursday. The board considered applications from the Taranaki Rugby Union for the use of the ground each Saturday as required and from the Rugby League for every third Saturday. Cr. Glasgow moved that the union be. granted the use of the ground on the same terms as last year. Cr. Reeves moved an amendment that the League be given the ground one Saturday in three. It was impossible to play Rugby football on Nelson Park because of the growth of blackberry. The amendment was lost and the motion carried.

The Mayor undertook to have Nelson Park cut and the blackberry mowed.
