BARTER ADVOCATED

SALES OF DOMINION PRODUCE. FARMERS’ UNION REMITS. Barter as a means of improving the sale of the Dominion’s primary produce on the overseas market was cited with approbation in two remiis dealing with trade which were before the annual conference of the Waikato Sub-Provincial District of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at Hamilton.

Defining the menace of restrictions '‘upon New Zealand’s exports to Britain " and the increasing severity of competition in the Home market as the grounds for the suggestion, Mr. J. H. Furniss strongly supported a Huntly remit which urged that every effort should be made to investigate co-operative relationships with the Co-op. Wholesale Society of Britain, not only as an avenue of distribution of primary produce, but also as a source of supply for the Dominion s overseas requirements. He pointed out that under an agreement with the Coop. Wholesale Society, Dominion farmers would obtain the marketing of their produce through the largest system of chain stores in England. A further Huntly remit urged that as a means of evading the barriers erected against the Dominion’s exports and an aid in reducing internal costs, an effort should be made to exchange quantities of primary products with other nations for such commodities in bulk as. were and suitable for the Dominion s requirements. The remits were carried.
