The death has occurred of Mr. Arthur Feez, K.C., of Sydney, one of Australia’s best known 1 barristers, states a Sydney cable.

The retirement on superannuation of Dr. G. Craig, Comptroller of Customs, as from April 30, is announced by the Press Association from Wellington.

Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. W. D. Cartwright, a councillor of the -Taranaki County Council, was expressed by the Waitara Borough Council last night.

Mr W. Hall, who has been re-elected president of the Huirangi branch of the Farmers’ Union, has been president of the branch since its inception eleven years ago. Speaking at the branch meeting last night, Mr. D. Le C. Morgan congratulated the branch on having so excellent a president. Mr. Hall, he said, had worked consistently for the good of the union ever since its formation. The death occurred suddenly at New York from cerebral haemorrhage of Mr. Adolph S. Ochs, publisher and controlling owner of the New York Times. Mr. Ochs started life as a newsboy at Knoxville, Tennessee, later becoming printer’s devil, then a compositor and finally publisher and proprietor of the Chattanooga Times. He became publisher of the New York Times in 1896 and was one of the world’s outstanding journalistic figures. He was honoured by universities and societies in all parts of the world.

Mrs. Mary Ami Allen, Devon Street East, New Plymouth, celebrated her 90th birthday yesterday. The widow of Mr. Thomas Allen, who arrived at New Plymouth by the ship Amelia Thompson with his parents when only four years old, Mrs. Allen still enjoys excellent health and has a wide, variety of interests. She was married to Mr. Allen in 1864 in Australia. On their return they lived at the corner of Watson and Devon Streets until the trouble with the Maoris had subsided sufficiently to allow them to take up a farm at what is now known as the Meeting of the Waters.' After 40 years’ residence there they retired to New Plymouth, living for more than 20 years in Avenue Road before moving to Devon Street East. Yesterday Mrs. Allen received congratulations from a wide circle of friends.
