POPPY DAY APPEAL.
To-morrow the annual “Poppy Day” appeal will be made by the New Plymouth Returned Soldiers’ Association on behalf of those who suffer from war disabilities. Unfortunately, the need for succour increases rather than diminishes as the years pass on. In many cases men have found as they grow older that disabilities unsuspected, or from which recovery was thought to have been complete, have reasserted themselves or become manifest. The years of depression have had their effect also, and the urgency of the need is therefore greater than ever. There is little need in Taranaki to stress the fact that the opportunity of making some return to those .who sacrificed so much should be welcomed rather than otherwise. The shadow of war is nearer to-day than since the great conflict that was to have ended war was brought to its conclusion, and sacrifices similar to those made twenty years ago may yet be demanded of the Dominion. Be that as it may, the assistance sought to-mor-row is for those who did not flinch in the hour of need, who were promised the cordial support of the community they served at such personal cost, and who are by no means vociferous in making claims upon the community. It should be known also that none of the money subscribed to-morrow will be absorbed in administration expenses. The whole of it will be applied to relief of ex-service-men and their dependents, the careful supervision of the distribution being in the hands of volunteers. The need is great, the administration of funds is sound, and it is for the community to do the rest. Experience of the response to such appeals in former years warrants the conclusion that to-morrow’s collections will be worthy of the good work they will enable to continue and extend.
