MEETINGS OF BRANCHES Fraser Road: The second annual meeting was held on Friday afternoon and was well attended. The president (Mrs. L. B. Galbraith) in the annual report stated that the membership of the branch was 25, an increase of four since last year. Interest in the branch activities had been well maintained, and new features were the institution of monthly competitions and the commencement of a library. A competition for the greatest number of white butterflies collected by a school child was arranged and was won by Bruce Sharpe (18,050), with Darcy Nicholson (16,396) second and Rex Thompson (14,040) third. The total number collected by all competitors was 65,767. Members were pleased at the result of the display at the Hawera winter show, the branch exhibit gaining fifth place. Those members who arranged the exhibit were thanked. Thanks were expressed to the others who, assisted the branch. The winner of the points prize for the monthly competitions was Miss G. Coleman. The prize was a cushion given by Mrs. H. Sanderson. The finances of the branch had been well maintained, and although the credit balance had dropped from £4 15s 9d to £2 5s 3d this was due to a de-> crease in receipts from entertainments. Arrangements were made for holding an evening gathering to celebrate the branch’s second birthday.

Auroa: The annual meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon, when there. was a good attendance presided over by Mrs. Benton. The president’s report stated that during the. year there were 11 meetings. Among the biggest efforts was the staging of a court at the Hawera winter show, a successful spring show and a musical afternoon at the end of the year when Farmers’ Union members were' invited. A combined'picnic of the Farmers’ Union and Division members was held at Mount Egmont.. Demonstrations were given by Mr. Davis, Mrs. Lovell, Miss Blake and Mrs. Cleaver. Lectures were given by Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., and Mrs. Lovell. Competitions on sugar bag articles and potato crops proved helpful. Mrs. Duff was presented with a Victorian posy by Mrs. Schwieters, and with a guinea from the branch by Mrs. Lyndon. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of over £B. The election of officers President, Mrs. Benton; secretary, Mrs. Duff; vice-presidents, Mesdames C. Muggeridge, King, T. Haworth, and Fairbrother; advisory members, Mesdames T. Austin and J. Symes. Arrangements were made for a “Mothers’ afternoon.” Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs. Corrigan, Miss Corrigan, and Mrs. W. H. H. Young in their bereavements. The Farmers’ Union gave a donation of two guineas and it was decided it should form the neucleus of a fund for providing emergency ‘ help to members. It was decided to donate two guineas to the community chest. A bring and buy stall realised about £l. Hostesses were Mrs. P. C. Hall and Mrs. T. Haworth.

Matau: The annual meeting was held on Wednesday when the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. L. Ayers (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mrs. W. McCoard and Miss Larsen; secretary, Mrs. A. Smith (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs. W. Rawlinson (re-elected); advisory members, Mrs. A. Rolfe-and Miss j. Coulter.' The president reported that the birthday party last month resulted in a credit •balance of £8 3s 6d. Out of this it was decided to send £1 to the community chest fund at Wellington to pay for a locker for books, etc., to be left at the hall and to present cups and saucers to the committee. The white butterfly and grubs’ competition for local children produced entries totalling 12,421 butterflies and 9929 grubs. The prizes for the competition’ were won as follows: White ' butterflies ’ (prize given by Mrs. A. Rolfe), Alex Rolfe (5850) 1, Dudley Smith (5347) 2; grubs (prizes given by local W.D.F.U.), Melville Smith (5366) 1, Bruce Rawlinson (2704) 2, Gwittha McCoard (771) 3. Invitations were received from the Inglewood and Cardiff to attend birthday celebrations. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Young, Stratford, whose son died recently. Manala: The annual meeting of the branch was held yesterday. Mrs. J. W. Paterson presided over a large attendance. The report gave a review of the year’s work and showed that the branch had a very successful year both financially and socially. The balance-sheet showed a good credit balance over the year’s working. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. J. ‘W. Paterson; vice-presidents, Mrs. B. Bloor and Nurse Merrie; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Byrne; advisory members, Mrs. W. O. Duncan and Nurse Merrie; delegates to the provincial executive, Mesdames J. W. Paterson, B. Bloor and F. McPhillips; delegate to the annual conference, Mrs. J. W. Paterson; social committee, Mesdames T. Huckstep, J. Mcßreen, B. Reardon, Misses Scott and Hughes. In appreciation of his services as auditor for several years it was decided to make a presentation to Mr. V. H. Hobday. The competition for the first meeting this year will be for the best article made from scraps of old material. It was decided to make a presentation to the secretary, Mrs. Byrne, for the able and generous way in which she carried out her duties. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove for the use of his shop for a street day. Hurworth: The annual meeting of the branch was held in the hall on Thursday, Mrs. F. Baker presiding over an attendance of 31 members and visitors. The annual report stated that the year had been very successful. Members had attended a number of birthday parties. Miss Violet MacMillian, lecturer at Victoria University College, visited the branch in June, and the members who attended found the lecture interesting. Demonstrations were given by Mrs. T. Lindsay, Inglewood, and Mrs. V. Dryden, Egmont Village. Two successful five hundred card parties were held in aid of the community chest, £6 6s being sent. Leather goods were sold, on behalf of the Institute for the Blind. The branch financed one housekeeper and helped with clothes. Help was also given in supplying afternoon tea to the Farmers’ Union. Officers elected were: President, Mrs. F. Baker; vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Allan and C. Blizzard; secretary, Mrs. R. Allan; committee, Mesdames C. Ross, Parker, S. Roger and Miss D. Waldo ck. Hostesses were Mrs. E. Pepperell and the Misses N. Gilbert and W. Pepperell.

Ratapiko-Manganui: The annual meeting of the branch .was held on Friday in the Ratapiko hall. , The president reported a successful year, andi the bal-

ance-sheet showed a satisfactory financial position. The roll number stood at 23. One member was elected. During the year donations were made to the community chest, Inglewood Chamber of Commerce Christmas tree fund, and the Pan-Pacific Association. The social activities included a concert and dance in conjunction with the cricket club, a social' evening with , the Farmers’ Union and a five hundred party. A potatogrowing competition which was won by Mrs. Bowling, brought in a good sum, as did goods sold at the Women’s Division exchange mart held at Stratford. A peggy square quilt donated and made by members also swelled the funds. Demonstrations were given by Mesdames Telfer, Hunt, Ward and Adams. Lectures were given by the Rev. Boyd Bell and Dr. Armstrong. The branch again joined with the Tariki Women’s Institute in entertaining ex-ser-vicemen on Anza.c Day. A community picnic was held in Mr. Shepherd’s bush/ A large parcel of clothes was sent to the Mayoress of Inglewood for distribution. The branch attended several birthdays and in return entertained in June. The following officers were President, Mrs. Hucker; vice-presidents, Mesdames Willans and Lepper; secretary, Mrs. Telfer; committee, Mesdames Petch, Shepherd, Bredin, Moratti and Nolan; advisory members, Mesdames Dust and Willans; delegates ,to central executive, Mesdames Dust and Telfer. ‘ Alton: At the annual meeting last week there was a large ' attendance. The president reported a very successful year financially and . socially. She thanked the members for their support and co-operation during her four years of office. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs. W. E. Taylor (re-elected), vice-presidents, Mrs. H. Hall and Miss E. Foreman; secretary, Mrs. H. A. Sutherland; treasurer, Mrs. W. Metcalfe; committee, Mesdames A. P. Schwass, Ward, J. Hurley, H. Palmer and Oakley; advisory trustees, Mesdames Burnand and Oakley; Press correspondent, Mrs. Dillingworth; delegates to executive meetings, Mrs. H. Sutherland and Miss Foreman. Mesdames A. J. Gibbs and Bell (Auckland) judged an iced cake competition, the prizewinners being Miss G. Hall 1, Mrs. A. P. Schwass 2 and Mrs. H. Suthland 3. There were nine entries. It was decided to hold a birthday party early in June. The hostesses were Mrs. Famon and Misses R. and M. Amon.

Purangi: The Purangi branch held its annual meeting on April 4. Two new members were elected'. The president in her report stated that i although only in existence a few months the branch had made wonderful strides. A donation had been made to the community chest and all supplies had been paid, for. There was a credit balance of 18s, Hd. Several interesting demonstrations and lectures were given by members. and visitors, which were much appreciated by the branch. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. H. in charge of competitions, Mesdames J. Mounsey and E. A. Mathews; programme committee, Mesdames Watkins, Webb, Mathews, Fletcher, George and Misses A Campbell andi S. Mounsey. The monthly competitions were for the best arranged vase of flowers (Mrs. Watkins 1) and for “something new from something old” (Mrs. J. S. Fletcher 1). A demonstration was given by Mrs. Gilliver (Coromandel) and she was accorded a vote of thanks. The prizes for the greatest number of points over the season’s competitions were won by Mrs. Turner 1, Mrs. Watkins 2, Mrs. Webb 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Webb and' Miss S. Mounsey. Lepperton: The annual meeting was held in the hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. H. E. Blyde presiding over a large attendance, including two visitors. A competition for a leather shopping bag was won by Miss N. Wallace. Votes of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Mr. W. D. Cartwright and the late Mr. Freestone. Invitations were received to attend the Inglewood and Smart Road birthday parties. The meeting placed on record the work of the retiring secretary, Mrs. P. A. Openshaw. A kitchen evening was arranged for Miss Wallace and Mr. S. Wellington. The president in the fifth annual report stated that the year had been successful financially and) socially.
