POPPY DAY APPEAL

ARRANGEMENTS MADE AT HAWERA. HOUSE CANVASS AND STREET DAY. A meeting to ascertain the extent of the assistance available from various organisations in the sale of poppies was held at Hawera on Tuesday evening. Mr. J. E. Campbell, chairman of the Returned Soldiers’ Poppy Day committee, presided and bodies represented were the Turitown Institute, Women’s National Reserve, Red Cross Society, Turuturii Institute and Returned Soldiers’ Association. The secretary, Mr. S. R. Veitch, was in attendance. All societies represented agreed to assist in the sale of poppies and the assistance of Toe H was promised. Mr. Campbell stated that during 1932 the Poppy Day Fund had a surplus of approximately £lOO. In 1933 in view of the peculiar circumstances it was considered desirable to distribute this surplus as additional to the amounts ordinarily available, with the result that the fund had now only available for distribution an amount equal to the income. Last year £BO was distributed to ex-service-men, principally those suffering from war disability. He referred to the generosity of the general public in regard to the appeal and stated that he felt sure there would be, by the careful organisation and the hard work of the societies co-operat-ing, a surplus on collections from this year’s effort. It was arranged that there would be a house to house canvass by the organisations interested to commence on Tuesday, April 16. Poppy Day was fixed for Thursday, April 18, and on that day thte Women’s National Reserve would conduct a street day in form similar to that of previous years. The committee unanimously adopted the resolution that the use of the Returned Soldiers’ Association poppies in wreaths to be placed on the war memorial on Anzac Day be recommended.

NORMANBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Normanby school committee was held on Monday night, those present being Mr. A. Galloway (chairman), Mesdames W. G. Gane and T. Evans, Messrs. W. H. Bennett, p. Whitelock-, C. L. Hay and T. Evans, secretary. The chairman in extending a welcome to Mr. Hay offered him congratulations on his appointment. In his monthly report the headrhaster, Mr. T. Taylor, said the roll number remained the same as for the previous month, there having been three admissions and three withdrawls. The senior inspector, Mr. C. N. Haslam, visited the school and Miss Lawson, of the Hawera dental clinic, made a preliminary examination. The flag-pole had been erected and the grounds had been cleared. The unused section of the experimental grounds had been sown with blue lupin to be later dug in. The school participated in the. South Taranaki sports but owing to the transport difficulty was unable to field a full team. It was questionable whether or not it was advisable to close the school for such occasions. . > The question of holding a suitable ceremony on Anzac Day for the school children and others interested was fully discussed, it being decided to unfurl the new flag and hold a memorial service. Arrangements were left in the hands of Messrs. Galloway, Hay and Evans. The Taranaki Education Board wrote statir- that Miss J. Shanks, Akaroa, had been appointed infant mistress and would take up her position in May. The board wrote suggesting that if the committee could obtain permission from the town board it would arrange to close part of Grey Street to be used to enlarge the playing area. It was thought that as Grey Street is a very little used grass street situated between the school and the playground the arrangement might be suitable. Mr. Galloway was appointed to approach the town board in the matter.

Messrs Hay and Bennett were appointed a visiting committee for the month.

“MY SONG FOR YOU.” JAN KIEPURA AGAIN. Written to afford Jan Kiepura every opportunity for displaying his beautiful voice, “My Song For You,” the Gau-mont-British musical comedy-romance released by Fox Films, showing at the Hawera Opera House to-day, captured the highest entertainment honours. It will be presented for a season of three nights, with special matinees daily at 2 p.m. Kiepura shares the romance of the story with delightful Aileen Marson, romance for the most part filled with gaiety and certainly always wholesome. Mention should also be made of the diverting comedy provided by Reginald Smith as a fiance inclined to philander, as well as of Emlyn Williams’ clever study of an over-ambitious under-talent-ed pianist. The picture is finely presented, with novel scenes such as a concert at a swimming pool, in which half the audience listens from the water, while the landing stages and galleries are crowded with fashionably attired folk. Spectacular settings are numerous and several beautiful scenes, taken on the Riviera, further enhance the quality of this picture, of which the producers may
