EXTENSION OF CONCRETE AREA.

DESIGN FOR FOOTBALL JERSEYS.

At the monthly meeting of the West End school committee last night Mr. W.

H. Jones reported on the proposal to extend the concrete on the, ■western side of the school with the object of preventing further serious erosion by rainwater flowing -down the adjoining, hill. He estimated the cost of 1000 square feet of concrete three inches thick .at £24. "~ The committee decided to apply to the Taranaki Education Board' for 24 ■ bags of cement free, the committee io find; the shingle and labour; In the event of. the board granting the cement the committee will organise a working-bee for the work.

Mr. W. A. Brown, headmaster, reported that the roll number last week was 367 and the average attendance 342. As this was his last report before his departure for Dunedin to take charge of the Kaikorai school, Mr. Brown expressed thanks to members of the committee for their co-opbration during the two years he had been headmaster. A suggestion for the design of the new school football jerseys was made by Mr. A. B. Barns, first assistant. ' He recommended a grey shoulder and upper arm, red in the centre of the trunk .and middle of the arm, and grey on the lower trunk and lower part of the arm. This would avoid the possibility of confusion with jerseys of another school that had either of the West End colours, he wrote. The pattern recommended was similar to that of the Clifton club.

The committee decided to adopt the pattern suggested by Mr.. Bams. Captain Hay and the headmaster were authorised to deal with the question of children whose dental fees were to be paid by the committee. Mr. Brown reported that the borough turncock had informed him that the charge for water registered through the meter would date from April 8. From November 25 to April 8 the registration was- 304,000 gallons. The Tukapa Football Club forwarded a match football to the school for rise in competition matches. The committee expressed its thanks to the club. Mr. Jones was authorised to make inquiries from Mr. C. H. Moore, the education board architect, regarding the proposed extension of the gymnasium. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of householders on April 29. Present at the meeting were Messrs. C. O. Berg (chairman), W. H. Jones, F. May, F. Brunton, S. Jury, H. L. Hay and H. J. Abram (hon. secretary). During the discussion of Scout and Cub business Mesdames James, Walls and Davis were present. Visiting committees were ap- { pointed as follows: Messrs. Brunton, Hay, Hooker and Jury (Scouts) and Mesdames Hoben, Davis, Walls and James (Cubs).

FUNERAL AT MANAIA. DEATH OF MRS. HARRINGTON. The funeral of Mrs. Harrington, Taikatu Road, who died on Saturday, took place at Manaia on Monday. Requiem mass was celebrated at Manaia at 9 o’clock, the celebrant being the Rev. Father Breen. At 2 p.m. the funeral moved from the Catholic Church, followed by a large cortege, for the Manaia cemetery. Father Breen conducted the service at the graveside and at the church. Many floral emblems were placed on the casket. The pall-bearers were Messrs. P. Keppell, S. Kelly, E. Horgan, P. Kelly, W. Hughes and H. Clarke. ' Personal and General. While playing football at the Manaia school on Monday Trevor Bennett broke .his leg. The boy broke ’the same leg some months ago at the same sport. He was admitted to the Hawera hospital and is reported to be progressing favourably. Mrs. C. A. Burke, Kaupokonui, who is in the Hawera hospital, is making good progress towards recovery. Mrs. B. Pease, Manaia, who has been in a Hawera private hospital, has recovered sufficiently to enable her to leave hospital. She is now recuperating at Mangatoki. KATUA HOCKEY CLUB DANCE. FOX-TROT COMPETITION. The fox-trot carnival organised by the Katua Ladies’ Hockey Club was a decided success, there _ being one of the largest attendances in the district for some time. The music was played by Hooker’s Orchestra and the free busses from Opunake and Hawera were exceptionally well filled. The fox-trot competition was won by Miss T. Yarrow and Mr. Archer. A ' spot waltz was won by Miss Una West and Mr. Ainsworth while a trophy for secord place was presented to Mr. Feaver and Miss Savage. Other dances were won by: Monte Carlo waltz, Mr. Evans and Miss Duncan with Mr. H. and Miss E. Harris second; statue waltz, Miss V. Hughes and Mr. W. Kennedy. Mr. A. Elkerton was master of ceremonies. Extras were played by Mr. W. Ruakere and Mr. Stuart Gordon, who gave a number of items. Mesdames Mahar and Isaacs were in charge of the i ”">per room.
