WEST END SCHOOL GATHERINGS.

MONEY FOR THE GYMNASIUM.

A profit of £B7 from the week’s celebration of the West End school jubilee was reported to a general meeting of representatives of the committees held last night. It was decided to recommend the school committee to spend the whole amount on the improvement of the ■gymnasium, an object towards which the school and home association had already Voted £5O. Mr. C. O. Berg, who presided, said the total receipts, including the proceeds of efforts preceding the jubilee week, were £349 2s lOd, and the expenses £262 2s Bd. Mp. The balance-sheet was adopted, after Mr. W. H. Jones had commended the wisdom of raising money before jubilee week. He complimented members of the committees on their hannonious relations.

The chairman said 95 per cent, of the success was due to the women on the committees. Everybody had worked splendidly, and theye had been the utmost goodwill, he said. Mr. S. Jury referred to the help the jubilee had received from sports bodies, the Salvation Army, Regimental and Caledonian bands, Station 2YB and the Fire Brigade. Votes of thanks were passed to these organisations, Special mention was made of the services of Mr. H. J. Abram as secretary, and he was voted an honorarium.

Referring to the question of allocating the profits, the headmaster, Mr. W. A. Brown, urged the claims of the school library. He said it was essential to have an adequate number of suitable books if the children were to receive the full benefit from primary tuition. He considered the desire to read should be encouraged through the library from the time the children were in Standard 1. A library was a most important adjunct to school equipment, he said. While recognising the importance of a library, the meeting decided to devote the total profits to the gymnasium. It was pointed out that when the gymnasium was made suitable for the holding of social gatherings by the addition of a kitchen and cloakroom, it would be possible to raise funds in it for the library.

It was at first proposed to vote £6O to the gymnasium, but the meeting favoured an amendment to spend the whole of the .proceeds on the building.
