NOT TO RACE AGAIN

CAREER OF SILVER SCORN.

GREAT -THREE-YEAR-OLD RECORD.

Silver. Scorn, is not likply to- race again. In any case, she would riot be able to run this, season and she. is'rising six years. Her owner-trainer, F. T. Cush, in announcing her retirement was probable, remarked that she'Was too valuable a mare with ‘ whom to run risks of a serious breakdown.

Thus probably ends .one of the most disappointing overseas records of a highclass New Zealand performer. As a general rule, New Zealand horses acclimatise themselves exceedingly well in the Commonwealth, but there have been previous cases in which really good performers in tire Dominion have. failed to reproduce their true; form in. Australia, even when domiciled there for seasons. There could be several possible explanations and one of these is that these horses have never really got used to the change of climate. Silver Scorn was bred in 1929 by G. Murray Aynsley. She is a daughter of Silverado, a son of Polymelus, who has done stud duty in both Australia and New Zealand. Contempt, dam of Silver. Scorn, was bred by the late Mr. C. G. Dalgety. She was by Bonny Glen (sbn of Stepniak) from Lady Disdain, by The Officer (son of Robinson Crusoe) from Oriflamme, by Dreadnought. Murray Aynsley raced Silver Scorn until he sold her after the New Zealand Cup .meeting of 1932 for 2000 guineas. He continued to . train the filly for her new owner, the Sydney trainer, F. T. Cush, until after the Auckland Racing Club meeting at. the following Easter. Silver Scorn was then taken to Sydney where she has remained. In New Zealand Silver Scorn raced 14 times and the only occasion on which she met with defeat was in the Christmas Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, 1932, when her rider, the late A. H. Eastwood, had a foot severely injured In a collision with the rails during the race. Her stake winnings in this country amounted to £4440, of which £1725 went to her breeder and £2715 to Cush. Thus Cush was showing a good profit before he ever landed the mare at Sydney. As it turned out that was just as well. At four years in Australia Silver Scorn finished out of a place in 12 of her 16 starts. She won twice and was second and third in two other races. Her earnings in stakes were £BB5. In the spring of this season she had three more races, missing a place in each. Her complete record is, therefore: 33 starts, 15 wins, two seconds, one third, 15 times unplaced, and £5325 in stakes. In detail, her record is:—
