WIN FOR TOWN

MASON CUP CRICKET i " FIRST INNINGS LEAD OF 38 SLOW BATTING GENERAL NORTH TARANAKI FIXTURE By gaining a lead of 38 runs on the .first innings in an uncompleted game at Pukekura Park on Saturday, the North Taranaki Town representative team successfully defended the Mason Cup against the Country team. In its first •innings Country made the small score of 95 runs. In reply Town was not extended to reach a total of 133, the later batsmen giving their wickets away cheaply. Country’s second innings had realised 100 runs for five wickets when stumps were drawn. The best scorn was made by O. Foreman, Who in Country’s second innings was undefeated for 48. He played steadily until near the- end of the day he began to hit hard and 'scored a good six off Nasmith. In the first innings R. Street relieved the tedium of slow and unenterprising Cricket with top score of 22, made in 25 minutes. N. Giddy, mote subdued than usual, unleashed SOme powerful, Well-timed drives in making 18 in each innings. Apart from Street tad Giddy, in the first innings the Country batsmen showed a lack of initiative that lost many runs. In the second innings with nothing at stake they batted more freely. The- partnership which gave Town a good start of 55 runs lasted 55 minutes. Nasmith batted quietly until he had scored 30, when he hit a six and thereafter made' valiant but fruitless attempts to repeat the performance. Davison was the second highest scorer. He produced well-timed shots behind the wicket, profiting by the bowlers’ speed. The other Town batsmen were more intent on scoring rapidly than on keeping their wickets intact. Spedding surprised the spectators by swinging a six off the first ball he received, tad Donnelly’s first scoring Shot also cleared the boundary. Three sixes were hit in Country’s second strike. The slow scoring for the greater part Of the game was difficult to understand. Ift the morning the outfield had a heavy dew on it, but this also gave the bowlers a wet ball to handle. In the afternoon the wicket Showed signs of wear. SPEDDING MOST DANGEROUS. The most dangerous Town bowler was j. Spedding with slow leg breaks. He was allowed top much latitude by Country. Although he took several overs td strike a length he was not at any stage expensive. In 12 bVerfc and twd balls he gave aWay 15 fuh§ for four wickets. His speed Off the Wicket and his low flight worried the batsmen considerably. Ift the Second infiings Larkin gained thfee wickdts for 12 runs. All his victims were caught When playing forward. Of the Country bowlers J. Sarteh, three for 18, was the most successful. Sp. Giddy Was always dangerous but the batsmen, treating him with respect, took ievf risks. P. Kivell, who was ndt available, was replaced by L. McKoy in the Country team. Only ofte run had beef! scored by Country, which batted first, when Sp. Giddy mishit a ball to square leg, where Spedding took a good catch. N. Giddy joined Stan. and. the pair were content to defend, four of the first six overs being maidens. Producing several shots well-timed, Norm. Giddy added the runs until with the score at 16 after 40 minutes’ play Spedding took the ball from Parkinson. After two overs of shortpitched balls Spedding tossed one up that the batsman forced into the hands bf Donnelly at mid-on. Sarten lost his partner, who was bowled by a full-toi>s from Loewenthal. He had batted for 75 minutes, for five runs. In attempting ah impossible run J. Staten was run out by Parkinson, and shortly afterwards E. Giddy put his leg in 'front td Larkin, who had replaced ■Spedding at the northern end. O. Forefnan and R. Street settled down, but Foreman waited 18 miftutes before scoring. Street, however, ift the freest exhibition of the innings hit fiohnelly fdr two, bringing 50 on the board, and then clouted him for fdur. He sent a rifeky one from Parkinsoh to a gap at gully after 1 hitting another four. HO lost Foreman, who snicked the ball to Parkinson, Who held ah excellent catch in slips. Street’s luck failed wheft he lifted a ball to Larkin off Parkinson’S bowling. McKoy was bowled found his legs. Piizey, joining Wilson, gave a difficult chahce in slips and Parkinson, in attempting the catch damaged a finger. STEADY SCORING. Wilson and Pizzey scored steadily, raising the score to 95 for eight wickets when the luncheon adjournment was taken, tn the first over after lunch Wilson, facing Groombridge, was caught at mid-dn off a weak shot and by bowling Pizzey Spedding ended Country’s in-

nings without addition. The -95 runs were scored in two hours 24 minutes. After opening confidently Nasmith and Davison were troubled by both Sarten and Sp. Giddy. Davison was fortunate with three snicks that went between the wicketkeeper and first slip, but scored more quickly than Nasmith. When 55 runs had been raised in even time a weak shot into slips saw the dismissal of Davison. The next ball from Sheard was a full-toss that Spedding hit in easy style for six. Nasmith hit a six off the first ball of Sheard’s next over, tad Donnelly opened his account off Wilson in similar manner. Donnelly lost Nasmith to Sarten, and after scoring two more boundaries put his leg in front to the same bowler.

Town required two runs when Lash joined Priest, and the score was passed after the innings had been in progress 90 minutes. Priest in playing forward lifted his toe and was stumped. Lash and Larkin carried on with Lash doing most of the scoring. He lost his wicket when he tipped one to St. Giddy off E. Giddy’s bowling. The tea adjournment was taken with Town 23 runs in the lead for a loss of six wickets. Larkin and Ewart Opened, but a foolish call saw- Ewart well out almost immediately. Wickets fell quickly, Parkinson being bowled and Loewenthal putting his leg in front. GrOombridge was gaining confidence when a risky second run resulted in Larkin being run out with the final total at 133. The second innings opened ittauspiciOusly for Country when first Staten and ■ then Sheard were caught by Loewenthal, fielding at silly leg. Foreman and Giddy, however, Carried the score along to 68. Loewenthal Obtained a nasty rise from the wicket that troubled Foreman and kept N. Giddy quiet. Giddy hit a delightful six off Groombridge. It was not until Larkin replaced Loewenthal that - N. Giddy mishit A catch to Lash at cover. Four balls later McKoy played an ■ indecisive forward shot to silly mid-on. After hitting Nasmith for Six, E. Giddy wgs dismissed l.b.w. to Larkin for the second time, with the score at 85. O. Foreman scored more freely eftd his tally included a six off Nasmith, who had kept wickets most of the game. Hk bowling was expensive, 24 runs coming from three overs. Foreman and Pizzey carried the score to 100 for five wickets when time brought the innings to a close. Foreman’s score contained one six and four fours. The teams were:—
