GOLF SEASON OPENS

FOURSOMES AT WAIWAKAIHO. FAIRWAYS IN SPLENDID ORDER. Nearly 100 players took, part in the mixed Canadian drive foursomes at Waiwakaiho on Saturday at the official opening match for the season. The fairways were in excellent order after the recent rains but the greens were rather difficult. The winners were Mrs. W. Middleton and Middleton with the fine card of 94—23—71. Clark 87—9—78; Miss Walker and R. A. Boon 92 —13—79. ELTHAM WOMEN’S GOLF. OPENING DAY COMPETITION. Misses Syme and Gannon, with a net score of 50, were the winners of a Canadian foursome played on the opening day of the Eltham Women’s Golf Club. There was a fair attendance and the weather was ideal. Other good scores were: Mrs. Taylor and Miss Gibson 51, Mrs. L. Quin and Miss Ritter 52. ABBOTT FERNS RETAINED. Gill (9) and Tiplady (8) resisted a challenge for the Abbott Fems at the Eltham links and beat H. Casey (5) and F. Clemow (5) one up. HAWERA STARTS SEASON. CANADIAN FOURSOME RESULT. The official season for golf in South Taranaki was opened on Saturday, when the Hawera Club had its opening day. A large number, including representatives of almost every club between Stratford and Waverley, took part in a Canadian mixed foursome event, which was won by P. O. Veale and Miss D. Bryant with a net 74. Prospects for the club for the season are encouraging, a large number of new members having joined.
