PASTURE JUDGING

AUTUMN AWARDS MADE. NGAERE DISTRICT VISITED. Pastures entered in the field competition under the auspices of the Ngaere branch of the Farmers’ Union were subjected,to the autumn judging yesterday ' by Mr. A. G. Elliott, instructor in agriculture. Points are not being given until the judging in every district is completed, but the pastures were placed according to merit. A fair number of farmers, including the president of the branch, Mr. L. C. Harrison and the secretary, Mr. A. E. Slattery, followed the judging _ in the afternoon, and though Mr. Elliott, who has only recently been appointed to Taranaki, did not attempt to conduct anything in the nature of a field day, he gave useful information on various points. Lunch and afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. L. C. Harrison. Five farms were visited, and there were two entries at each, the placings being:— H. C. Taylor, No. 2 entry 1 A. D. Walker, N0.,1 2 A. D. Walker, No. 2 3 K. Jackson, No. 1 ET K. Jackson No. 1, L. Holly No. 1, H. C. Taylor No. 1, 4 equal. K. Jackson No. 2 and J. Faulkner No. 2, 7 equal. J. Faulkner No. 1 and L. Nolly No. 2. 9 equal. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. ELIMINATION EVENTS. To reduce the number of entries for the events in the annual sports of the Stratford Technical High School elimination heats were run at the school yesterday. The first and second performers will compete on sports day. Details are: Boys’ 100 yards handicap:—First heat: Clifford Jones (scr) 1, Gander (10yds) 2, 1. Ryburn (4) 3; Ils; Second heat: Bowler (2) 1, Rogers (12) 2, Feaver (10) 3; 11 2-ss. Third heat: Henderson (3) 1, Taylor (12) 2, Murray (14) 3; 11 l-ss. Fourth heat: McCullough (3) 1, B. Boys’ hop, step and jump handicap: More than 20 competitors were entered and an elimination trial of three jumps each was held to reduce the number to 10. The six best efforts were: McCullough (4ft) 42ft 2in, Arnold (lift) 41ft, Elliot (Bft) 40ft, Feaver Oft) 39ft 6in, Bamford 39ft 4in, Amess (sft) 39ft 2in. GENERAL ITEMS. Eltham Ritual Competition. Over 70 members, including visitors from Kaponga, Hawera, Stratford, Manaia, Okato, Toko and New Plymouth, were present at a meeting of the Eltham Manchester Unity Lodge on Wednesday evening. The local officers were judged in the district ritual competition,' and addresses were given by the visiting district officers, Bro. H. A. Bennett D.G.M., Bro. D. G. Sherson A.D.G.M., Bro. S. Bollen D. Treas and Bro. N. B. Bellringer D. Sec. A new member was initiated, and the evening concluded with supper and a few dances. Fire Prevention Week. The Stratford fire brigade gave a demonstration and water display last night in connection with fire prevention week. The alarm was given at 7.30 p.m. and the brigade gave a display at the corner of Broadway and Opunake Road and a water display in Broadway South. Later displays were given at the corner of Regan Street and Brecon Boad and at the corner of Pembroke Road and Broadway, followed by novelty events in front of the station which was thrown open to public inspection. Masonic Hall Euchre Party. The weekly party at the Masonic Hall was again popular on Thursday night. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs. Aagaard 1, Mrs. Martin 2, Miss Voght (consolation); men, Mr. Reader, junr., 1, Mr. D. Stewart 2. Climbing on Mountain. A good deal of climbing has been done on Mount Egmont from the Stratford side this week. Several parties have made the ascent to the summit, the largest being a party of 15 from Wharehuia, which spent the day on the mountain.
