SOLDIER SETTLERS
DIFFICULTIES ON THE LAND. SCALING DOWN OF VALUES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The financial plight of returned soldiers who had been placed on the land by the Government and who now found it almost impossible to meet their commitments was placed before the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union this afternoon by Mr. W. R. Mabson, president of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association, and Mr. W. Ayson, vice-president of the Aparima branch of the Farmers’ Union and honorary secretary of the Otautau subbranch of the R.S.A.
Both spoke of the necessity for revaluing the land occupied by soldier settlers in order that they might have a reasonable chance of making good. At the same time the speakers asked for support for a petition which had been drawn up urging the scaling down of land values for soldier settlers.
The Farmers’ Union passed a resolution urging those responsible to give special • and generous consideration to soldier settlers in any readjustment of land values.
