NORTHERN TROTTING

FORERUNNER OF CIRCUIT GOOD FIELDS AT EPSOM TO-DAY. REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS. (Special to Daily News.) Auckland, March 22. With several horses likely to race on the West Coast circuit engaged at the ■Auckland meeting to-morrow their form will be of interest in view . of their southern engagements. Particular interest will centre in the running of Impromptu, who will meet the New Zealand champion Harold Logan in a match at Wanganui. At Epsom last season Impromptu beat ’Mr. Hind’s horse, but at Hutt Park Harold Logan had his revenge. To-day’s fields are good and the racing should be full of interest. Devonport Handicap. Star Pronto should have won at bis last start, and as he is still improving he must have a fine chance. Bonny Azure was third to Subsidy and Proletarian in the Epsom Derby when not quite ready, and should do better Derby Fam-'.is working promisingly and Kia Kaha, Tinokaha. and Muriel Bond have been placed several times. Aerial Bell, Cbarterls. Roy and Shining Metal have prospects,. but likely favourites are Star Pronto, Bonny Azure and Derby Fame. Franklin Handicap. Rare Rey is the horse with the best form of those on the limit, but he cannot afford to lose much ground at the start. Min Bells and Silver Watch are also usually slow to get away. Good beginners like Lucy Love, Tryment and Peter Junior will bo dangerous, while Prince Etawah is not without prospects. One of the hardest to t -t will be Bonnie Direct, and she may be well fancied with Rare Rey and Peter Junior. Fergussnu Handicap, Quantity is a feature of the big race, but with nothing of any special moment at the -two miles the issue is very open. Recent form suggests Bingen Chief as best off the end, but both Travis and Nelson de Oro have past form to recommend them. Nimbus is in great heart and in winning strain, while Prince Pedro only needs to be tuned up to give a good deal of trouble. At his best Pukemiro hangs on well. A soft track would spit Lady Coronado. Probably Nimbus, Bingen Chief and Prince Pedro will have most support. Whitford Handicap. In spjte of 'tjie small Held the Whitford Handicap is a decidedly open event, as all the sire trotters hag already shown solid form. Rustle is suffering from a cold, but if he is right and the track is dry Jie will trot a great race. Gala Day was unlucky at her last start, while Mute, who won twice last month, Te Kahu, Mountain Sun and Manna's Son are a useful lot. Should Rustle be absent Te Kahu and Gala Day may be favoured. March Handicap. Unless Bonny Azure, Star Pronto or Tinokaha can win the Devonport Handicap, they are not likely to give away a 36 yards handicap to start in this race, but if any one of .them is successful earlier that horse will again go well. Rock-

ella comes from the south with good credentials, and Winaway created a fine impression when winning last month. Lucky Love and Min Bells are possibilities, but the fancied competitors may be Rockella, Winaway and Lucky Lov®. Henderson Handicap. Bonnie Direct is giving away 24 yards and her chance of starting may be governed by her success or otherwise in the Franklin Handicap. On hep February running Kewpie’s Bond will be hard to beat, while War Girl, with a reasonable getaway, will be troublesohie. A s6ft track will suit Luminate and Parrish Belle should run well. Social Pest will be very dangerous, while - Guid Hairst seems to be improving. The order of favouritism may be Kewpie’s Bond, Social Pest and War Girl, . ■Papatoetoe Handicap. With the exception of Francis Lincoln, Kewpie’s Guy, Kewpie’s Triumph and Impromptu, the horses listed for this race are in the two miles event, and their showing earlier should prove a useful guide to their sprint chances. Travis will be well suited by the distance, and so will Homeward, Jackie Thorpe and Nelson de Oro. Prince Pedro and Nimbus are recent winners at the distance. Of the fresh horses Francis Lincoln, Kewpie’s Guy and Impromptu should go well. In a puzzling pool the order may be Travis, Jackie Thorpq and Francis Lincoln.
