The season does not appear to have been a very favourable one for root crops, mangolds in particular having suffered from disease. A Waitoitoi farmer also found it impossible to secure a strike of either swedes or turnips. First he sowed an area with swedes without securing any results. He then resowed the patch with turnips with equally unsatisfactory results.
