WENDY'S DRESSMAKERS

KNITTED OUTFIT FOR A DOLL. This week’s special request is for a

knitted coat and cap for a doll, and a set made of woolly material as well. The woolly set may be easily made by using the pieces of knitting as patterns. Just lay them on the material, cut it out, allowing half-inch turnings, and join together, _ just as you join the pieces of knitting. The Knitted Coat.

The coat is knitted in six pieces—back, two fronts, two sleeves, and the smart scarf-collar. You will require two

ounces of four-ply wool, and a pair of number nine knitting needles. Begin at the lower edge of the back by casting on sixty stitches; knit into the backs of the first row, to make a. nice firm edge, then knit , one inch in garter-stitch (rows of plain knitting). Now change to stocking-stitch, (alternate rows of plain and purl knitting), and work three inches. Cast off two stitches, then knit two and a half inches of stockings stitch, and cast off. Both fronts are knitted in the same way, of course. Begin at. the lower edge of one by casting on thirty-eight stitches. Knit into the back of the first row, .then do one inch in garter-stitch, then three stitches at the armhole edge of the work to match the back, and knit in stockingstitch for one and a quarter inches. For the last one and a quarter inches, slope the front edge by knitting the first two inches of stocking-stitch. Cast off two when the front is as long as the back. Make the other front to match.

Begin at the cuff of a sleeve by casting of forty stitches. Knit one inch in gar-ter-stitch, then continue in stockingstitch, increasing one stitch at the beginning and end of the first ten knit rows.. Continue till the sleeve is almost long enough for the doll’s arm. For the last inch, shape the top by knitting the first two stitches of every row together, then cast off. Make the second sleeve to match.

Now join the pieces of knitting together—the back to the fronts at the shoulders, and the sleeves to the armholes, flat. Join up the side and underarm seams together.

To make the scarf-collar, cast on twenty-four stitches and knit two inches in garter-stitch. Next row, knit twelve, and turn. Knit on these twelve stitches for two inches, then slip them on to a safety pin. Break off the wool, join it to the beginning of the other twelve stitches, and knit two inches, picking up the first set of twelve stitches when you come level with them. Continue in garter-stitch till the scarf 1; about ten inches long, then cast off. Join it to the coat at the neck. As you see, the plain end slips through the slotted end. Pressstuds will keep the coat closed, and you can sew buttons down the front, doublebreasted style, as a finish. The cap is a strip of single-ribbing. Cast on fifty-six stitches, knit in. rib for three inches, then cast off. Sew the short sides together, gather up one edge,, and sew a wool tassel on top. Wendy’s Dressmaker.
