“PINK AND GREEN” AFTERNOON.

Miss Mary Hawken was the guest of honour at a “pink and green” gift afternoon at Hawera on Wednesday, when Miss Ruth'Pease, wearing an afternoon frock in mimosa, lime green and soft grey tones, was the hostess. Miss Hawken wore a deep marsh brown frock faintly flecked in white, with nigger brown felt hat. The hostess’ sister, Mrs. Norman, wore a frock fashioned in a smart patterned material in two tones of green and black. Following afternoon tea Mi-’** Hawken, who is to be married shortly, was the recipient of a number of gifts in the chosen colours of pink or green. Mesdames J. J. Pease, N. Lewes and Misses K. MRS. MEIKLEJOHN FAREWELLED. FLAG FIVE-HUNDRED EVENING. As a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Meiklejolm who are to leave New Plymouth for Auckland, a flag five-hundred evening was given by Mesdames K. N. Andrews and T. Jones at the residence of Mrs. Andrews, Tukapo Street, Westown, on Tuesday night. The drawing room, which was tastefully decorated, accommodated ten tables. The winning table comprised Mrs. C. Jury,, Mr. and Mrs. E. Jury and Mr. F. Price, while Mrs. G. Pearson won the special travelling flag prize. After supper Mr. Andrews expressed pleasure at the promotion their guests had deservedly received, but he expressed regret that it necessitated their departure from the district, where they had been held in high esteem. He presented the guests with a bedroom clock of unique design and Mr. T. Jones also added his tribute •to the good qualities of the guests, who he wished health and prosperity. . Mr. Meiklejohn thanked the gathering for the gift, which he said was typical of the hospitality which they had received during the nine and a half years they had been at New Plymouth. Mr. R. J. Deare extended thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Andrews for having given such an enjoyable evening. Musical honours were accorded the guests and Mr. and Mrs. Andrews. Mr. and Mrs. H. Billing delighted the company with whistling duets. Mrs. Andrews to receive her guests wore a frock of flame georgette. Mrs. Meiklejohn wore Marina blue and white crepe de chene. OHURA ST. PATRICK’S BALL. LARGE NUMBER PRESENT. The St. Patrick’s ball held in the Plaza Theatre, Ohura, on Tuesday evening was an outstanding success. Vinsen’s Ambassadors' orchestra provided the music and Mr. Harold Seerup was master of ceremonies. Extras were played by Mrs. Harold Seerup and Mr. W. Mackay. Father Hoogvelt welcomed the visitors. The prize for a Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Anne Koorey and partner and a novelty train waltz was won by Mr. and Mrs. Ginders. Supper was provided by the women’s committee. Abbott. “A BILL OF DIVORCEMENT.” DRESSED PLAY-READING. There were about 40 present on Tuesday night at a dressed and read presentation, in Mrs. P. O. Veale’s large room at her Glover Road residence, of Clemence Dane’s dramatic play, “A Bill of Divorcement.” Th*e evening was organised by Mrs. McKenzie as a further effort to assist with funds for Baby Antoni in the Pllunket carnival. The characters were all well taken and showed careful thought and preparation by the cast, the personnel of which included Mrs. J. Stewart, Mrs. T. F. McKenzie, Miss I. M. Glenn, Miss J. Thomas and Messrs. W. G. Simpson, G. Chuck, T. Ellis, R. G. Gordon, and M. R. Jones. At the close of the play a savoury supper was served. Among those present were Mesdames A. Bonetti, P. O. CROQUET PLAYERS HONOURED.

At the Hawera croquet lawns last Saturday afternoon Mesdames J. S. McKay, A. E. Stevens and W. F. Buist were the guests of the club to celebrate their successes in the recent Taranaki croquet tournament at New Plymouth. Mrs. McKay won the championship singles and with Mrs. W. F. Buist for her partner won the handicap doubles. Mrs. A. E. Stevens and her partner were runners-up in the championship doubles. Congratulations were expressed by the club president, Mrs. W. G. Strange, and the three guests were each the recipients of a Victorian posy made and given by Mrs. C. H. Washer. Other speakers were Mrs. L. J. Bull, Miss M. C. Power and Mr; J. Clague (Manaia), the guests replying. A progressive tournament was played and continued after the tea adjournment, Clague being the winner. Those present included Mesdames W. G. Strange, C. H. Washer, F. Quin, A. Evans, Reid, Adamson, J. Syme, L. J. Bull, Livingston, Clague (Manaia), J. Ekdahl, J. B. Murdoch, R. Wylie, Oliver, Stevenson, A. M. Winks, J. E. Campbell, and Misses J. MIDHIRST SOCIAL NEWS.

Miss Redward (Waitara) was the guest of Mrs. Platt, Midhirst, at the weekMrs. Hodder (Whangamomona) and her two children are visiting Mrs. J. Willdon, Midhirst. Mr. and Mrs. A. Vickers have returned to Auckland after spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. P. Anderson, Midhirst. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson (Auckland) are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Spencer, Midhirst. A jolly social and dance was held in the Oddfellows’ hall, Midhirst, on Wednesday evening by the Midhirst Tennis Club. There was a large attendance. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss N. Graham and her partner, Mr. L. Knowles. The song given by Mr. Casey was well received, an encore being demanded. Music was supplied by Wright’s dance Land, with extras by Mr. Casey and Mr. S. Carter.
