MEETINGS OF BRANCHES Tariki: The annual meeting was held on Saturday, when Mrs. Kerr presided over a fair attendance. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. Kerr (re-elected); vice-president, Mrs. H. Knowles (re-elected); secretary, Mrs. Blair (re-elected); treasurer, Miss Browning (re-elected); committee, Mesdames L. Hollis, Horsnell, G. Knowles and F. Letts. The report showed a membership of 25 adults and 15 juniors. Points prizes for the year were awarded Mrs. Kerr (senior), Nancy Knowles (over 12 years) and Alma Letts (under 12 years). Prizes were presented by Miss Browning, who donated them. Flag five hundred evenings held during the winter were very popular. The Tariki platoon joined in the Anzac parade and was entertained at luncheon with returned soldiers, wives and families. One team from Tariki took part in the Inglewood drama festival. The sum of £4 7s lOd was the result of a sale of basketware for the Blind Institute. The competition for the afternoon was a sponge roll, results being: Senior, Mrs. Hollis 1, Mrs. G. Knowles 2 and Mrs. Manning 3; junior (four plain scones), over 12 years, Alma Letts 1, Hazel James 2, Nita McElroy 3; under 12 years, Joyce Knowles 1, Joyce Hildred 2, Margaret Hildred 3. Mrs. Loveridge, senr., and Mi’s. A. Wicksteed judged the competition. Hostesses for the afternoon were the junior members, in charge of E. Knowles. It- was decided to send Mrs. Letts as delegate to the Dominion conference at Auckland and .Miss Letts and Miss Ella Knowles as delegates to the council meeting at New Plymouth. Mrs. Kerr referred to the loss sustained by the institute in the death of Mrs. Kilsby. A flag five hundred was held on Saturday night and was well attended. The winning table was Mrs. Perret, Mrs. McElroy, Mrs. F. Hill and Mr. Fetch. Miss McElroy won the prize for carrying the most flags. Normanby: The committee of the Normanby Women’s Institute met on Tuesday, the newly-elected, president, Miss Free, presiding. The following officers were elected: Vice-presidents, Mesdames W. Bennett, W. G. Gane and A. J. Hopcroft; secretary, Mrs. V. F. Howell; treasurer, Mrs. F. W. Phillips; assistantsecretary, Mrs. A. Knuckey; competition secretary, Mrs. C. L. Hay; librarian, Miss Pearle Gane. The following sub-commit-tees were set up to assist when necessary: Demonstration, Mesdames J. Meuli and J. Linn; lecture, Mrs. Knuckey;

hostess, Mesdames Gane, Galloway and Allan; musical, Mesdames Bennett, Galloway and Miss Phillips; social, Mesdames Bennett, Hopcroft, Phillips, Allan and Misses Allan and P. Gane; handcraft, Mesdames Linn, Grantham, Misses P. Gane and D. Brisco; library, Mrs. Linn and Misses Allan and Gane; visitors’ book. Mrs. Knuckey; suggestion box, Mrs. Howell; trading table, Mrs. Gane. After the meeting Mrs. Howell served afternoon tea. Those present were Mesdames W. Bennett, W. G. Gane, A. Galloway, A. Hopcroft, A. Knuckey, J. Linn, J. Meuli and F. W. Phillips., Waitara: The annual meeting was held tliis week. Mrs. Cuming presided. A vote of sympathy with the family and relatives of the late Mrs. H. A. Foreman and Mrs. A. Rackley was passed, members standing in silence. A bound book, suitably inscribed, was presented by Miss Rattenbury, on behalf of the institute, to Mrs. Cuming, the retiring president, who is leaving the district, and good wishes for her welfare were expressed. Mrs. Kaye gave an instructive talk on the duties of officers and members. A competition for the best programme for the coming 12 months was judged •by Mrs. Kaye and Mrs. Smith, and resulted: Miss Rattenbury 1, Mrs. Jury 2, Mrs. Grant 3. A vote of thanks was accorded Mesdames Fuller and Johnston, who acted as scrutineers, also to Mesdames Kaye and Smith. It was decided to form a link with an institute in England, and it was left with Mrs. R. Armstrong to act. Neil; treasurer, Mrs. Sisley; committee, Mesdames Hogg, Sisley, Armstrong, Trim, Spurdie, Hingley, Limmer and Barden. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Barden and Goddard. Tawhiti: At the annual meeting on Friday there was a good attendance of members and visitors, Mrs. Tidswell presiding. The secretary presented the annual report and the treasurer the financial statement. Mrs. W. Kaye spoke on institute aims and ideals. Mrs. McGlade was elected president, with the following committee: Mrs. Appleyard, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. E. Barkla, Miss Ballantine, Miss Jean Easton, Miss Johnston, Mrs. Joyce, Mrs. Paterson, Mrs. Pepperell and Mrs. Tidswell. Miss Mathieson was re-elected auditor. The report recorded another successful year. The attendance had been good and keen interest had been taken at all meetings. Roll calls used this year had aroused a great deal cf interest. The exchange and bring and buy stalls were always well patronised. The membership showed an increase of 13 and there was a financial membership of 43 against 30 last year. The competition for the afternoon was for a pot of jelly, the winners being Mrs. McKinnon, Mrs. E. Barkla and Mrs. Paterson. The judge was Mrs. C. Ogle. Appreciative reference was made by "Mrs. Parker to the good work done by the president, Mrs. Tidswell, the secretary Miss Ballantine, and the treasurer, Mrs. Appleyard. Bouquets were presentetd to Mrs. Tidswell by Miss Nora Parker and to Mrs. Kaye by Miss Larcom. The bouquets were made by Mrs. Paterson and Miss Jean Easton. Mrs. Governor, secretary to the Taiporohenui Maori Institute, presented a sweet bouquet to Mrs. Tidswell. The hostesses were Mrs. Wyatt, Miss Tui Wyatt and Miss Mabel Wyatt. Delegates attended the birthdays of the Whareroa, Normanby, Ketemarae, Turitown, Okaiawa, Te Roti and the Taiporohenui institutes. On November 2 several members attended the special school for officers held by Mrs. Kelso. Perhaps the most outstanding event of the year was the first birthday party in June, over 200 being present. On December 21 the annual Christmas tree was held.

Inglewood: The annual meeting was held on Wednesday and was largely attended. The report and balance-sheet detailed the satisfactory work of a successful year. Peters, Miss Petersen; delegates to annual meeting at New Plymouth, Mrs. Adnams, other officers ex officio. The retiring president, Mrs. Adnams, was accorded a vote of thanks for her painstaking work on behalf of the institute. Mrs. Braybrooke was elected a life member. An invitation from the Inglewood W.D.F.y. to attend' a birthday party on April 10 was received. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. Hinge, Auckland, who had been a keen institute member, was passed, members standing in silence. Sympathetic reference was also made to the death of Mr. Corrigan, Hawera, and it was decided to send messages of sympathy to Miss Corrigan and Mr. Hinge. The potato-growing competition resulted: Heaviest weight (prize donated by institute), 281 b., Miss E. Trimble; second, Mrs. Peters; special prize donated by Miss Trimble, Mrs. Harwood, with Mrs. Lindsay second. The members’ stall in charge of Miss Trimble did excellent business. Blind Institute goods were exhibited by Mrs. C. D. Lowden and met with a ready sale. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Kivell, Jones, Blight, Coutts, Carter and Miss N. Porter. Kakaramea: The annual meeting was held on Friday, March 15, Mrs. F. Ramsbottom presiding over a good attendance. A vote of sympathy with Mrs. T. Morrison in her illness was passed and the wish was expressed for her speedy recovery. It was decided to nominate Mrs. Illingworth as candidate for the federation election. The Alton-Kakara-mea branch of the Women’s Division wrote inviting members to a garden party at Mrs. A. J. Gibbs’ residence, Alton. The annual report revealed a successful year’s work. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £7 9s 7d. Members felt deeply the passing of Mrs. A. R. Large, the first president of the institute, and a great worker in its interests until failing health forced her to relinquish office. The report continued to detail events reported from the monthly meetings. Officers elected were: President, Mrs. Ramsbottom; 'vice-presidents, Mrs. C. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. C. Lord and Mr. L. Pope for supervising the voting and to Mr. Pope for auditing. Mrs. C. V. Herbert, Patea, gave an interesting demonstration of tinsel paper pictures and was accorded a vote of thanks A competition for the best jar of preserved fruit resulted: Mrs. Hardaker 1, Mrs. Illingworth 2 and 3. There were 19 entries. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Carmicheal and Hamblyn and Miss S. Dwyer.
