EXPLOITATION OF CHARITY
The attempted exploitation at Albury, New South Wales, of charitable institutions and social relief by persons not in need was alleged lately by Mr C. H. Marshall, former president of the Albury. Benevolent Society. ■ Discussing the affairs of the society, from which officials have resigned in a body, Mr Marshall said it would probably be beneficial if the society did not function for 12 months. The society’s assistance, he said, had helped to foster beggars. Some people, who appealed to the society for assistance at every opportunity, were receiving considerable sums from the Government in family endowment, pensions, and relief work, and they were able to afford wireless sets, gramophones, and to attend picture entertainments.
