WHANGAMOMONA TRIALS

DOGS OF HIGH STANDARD J. BOYLE WINS SHORT HEAD. CONCLUDING DAY OF EVENT. Perfect weather, beautiful environment and work throughout of a very high standard all tended to give spectators at the Whangamomona Dog Trial Club’s annual trials, which opened on Thursday and continued yesterday, a most enjoyable time. Entries were large in all the events and the attendance good. A pleasing feature was the splendid exhibitions given by many Whangamomona and young competitors, who have undoubtedly benefited from watching the work of such experts as W. V. Mclntyre, Fraser Smith and Fred King. The course in the head, pull and hold in ring event, though it looked easy, was rather tricky. The sheep were let out on the top of the hill into a gentle dip between two low ridges., There was not much room to work, and several lots of sheep broke away. On the right hand cast two logs presented hazards, while on the left there were some stumps to negotiate That good casts could be made, however, was shown by the fact that two dogs earned full points for heading and three others only dropped half a point. Provided the dogs pulled straight, the course was easy, but drifting to either side caused trouble, as there was awkward broken country to negotiate. A number of dogs scored very well in the pull. The ring work found out several of. the dogs that had scored well in the head and pull, including J. Welsh’s Glen, which made a perfect head, and only dropped one point in the pull. It dropped 24 points in the ring, whereas the two leading dogs scored full points, and it had to be content with fourth place. ' The winner, W. V. Mclntyre's Cruachan, dropped only 1J points in his run, which was one of the best seen at Whangamomona. Nigger, the second dog, did perfect work both in the pull and in the ring. SPLENDID WORK Thirty competed in the short head, pull, drive and yard in which splendid work was again witnessed as far as the mouth of the pen. Only six managed to yard their sheep, several others being jnst beaten by time. Notable instances were D. Law’s Rile. This young competitor had given an almost faultless exhibition up to the pen mouth. His head and pull were faultless and so were his two drives, only dropping half a point at the hurdles. His dog did good work at the yard, but the sheep were very touchy during the morning and he did not get them in. As' at Awakino Fraser Smith’s Highland King was well in the running, only having dropped one point in the pull. He yarded a few seconds after time was called. It proved a great duel for first place between J. Boyle’s Meg a young Te Wera competitor, and the veteran W. V. Mclntyre’s well known Cruachan, the Te Wera lad going within two of the possible to beat Cruachan by half a point and gain his first open victory. Early in the afternoon of the second day, a start was made with the huntaway. This attracted 23 competitors. It was a course to test the dogs and show the true huntaways. The sheep, released from a pen on the flat, had to be driven up a slight slope and through the first set of flags. They had then to be slewed to the left and driven along the slope of a sideling through the next set of flags on top of the ridge. From there they had to be driven across a depression, prevented from taking a natural getaway, turned sharply and punched up a steep hill to the top of the ridge. Ten minutes were allowed and for the strong huntaways it proved ample, as several did the work in under four minutes. The tricky course, however, beat some of the proved huntaways. CHAMPIONSHIP CUP. Cruachan’s first in the long head and second in the short head secured for W. V. Mclntyre the championship cup of

tile meeting and the settlers’ £l2 12s silver cup, awarded for most points in classes I. and 11. It had to be won twice in succession with the same dog or three times at intervals with any dog. Mr. Mclntyre won it on both counts as Crua‘chan secured it this year and last year, and Chief Junior won it in 1929. Other names on the cup are: 1928, P. Forrester’s Charm; 1930, T. Reilly’s Paddy; 1931, S. George’s Flirt; 1932, Fraser Smith’s Highland King; 1932, T. Reilly’s Nigger.

The trials were held on the properties of Messrs. A. J. Curry and F. Burch, Marco Road, which provided an ideal course. The sheep were mixed aged ewes lent by Mr. K. A. Summerhayes. The organisation was excellent. The officials were Sheep stewards, Messrs. Gus Murphy, G. Gower and P. Coxhead; steward, Mr. D. Law; dog steward, Mr. W. Murphy; judge’s clerks, Messrs. J. G. Hodder and R. Bates; timekeeper, Mr. J. Garcia. The catering arrangements were supervised by Mesdames J. K. Law, W. Murphy, A. J. Curry, J. G. Hodder, R. Bates, A. J. Kjestrup, G. Murphy, E. Callaghan, V. Nichol and Misses D. Law and Savage. Details are:—
