INTERESTING FORM

AWAPUNI SIDELIGHTS SILVER RING’S SUPERIORITY. SUNNY SONG’S HURDLES WIN. (By Wire—Special to News.) Palmefston N., Last Night. Interesting form was exposed at Awapuni to-day on , the first day of the Awapuni races.' The going was good and the weather was brilliant. Pango, who was having his second race as a, jumper, was made a warm favourite for the Karere Hurdles and there was fair support for Sunny Song, who was confidently backed by the East Coast contingent. .The Tearaway Headland made the early running from a field that was fairly bunched except that Marching Song and Stroller were. a long way back. Sunny Song was in charge going down the back the last time and she ran on solidly to Win by two lengths- from Te Ua, with Pango third, just ahead of Tareha and Headland. Pango ‘was beaten three furlongs from home. Tareha ran a fair race. Marching Song was never a possibility, though hard ridden most of the way. Kaola Pays Dividend, Nearing the straight ini the Autumn Plate Wahine Nui. led. from Kaola and Arouse. Arouse got through on the rails but in a hard finish Kaola won by a head. Celerrimus was a‘ neck away third and Gay. Boy, Eka Tere, Chaste and Wahine Nui were next. Arouse had every chance. Kaola paid double figures. L. Dulieu rode the first two winners. Ruri’s Surprise Win.. The Hawera-trained Ruri won the Prince of. Wales Handicap decisively. Illuminate, who drew No. 1, was sent to the outer but began well and led out of the straight and. along the back from Glenvane, Miss Hushabye, Pladie, Red Sun and Aga Khan. Coming to the straight- Illuminate still led with Pladie going well and Ruri moving up on the outer. Ruri dashed past the field at the entrance, to the straight and went away for a decisive two-lengths .win over.Pladie, who just beat Illuminate and Aga Khan. Might, Miss Husabye, Red Sun, Rust, Glenvane and Korokio followed. Ruri won so well that no excuse can be made for-. the others. Aga Khan ran merely modestly and the course did not give Might the-same chance as Trentham did, in addition to which his weight was against him. Pladie was -pulling in the run along the back and would have been harder to beat had he been allowed to run along. Acceptable Wins . Easily ~ Acceptable won the Woodhey . Handicap very easily. He was always well placed and took charge three furlongs from home to score a runaway win by four lengths from Owlsgleam, with Cawbeen, Dollar Bill, Hatuma, State Bank, Secrecy and Contact following. Mata Hari was prominent to the turn but ran wide. Cawbeen should be improved by the race. ■ Severe Confirms Fotin. Severe confirmed the impression that she was unlucky to be beaten on the first day at Trentham by winning, the Clbverlea Nursery. She went to the front at the entrance to the straight. Gay Shiek challenged but she always held the upper hand and won by a neck, while I! Duce just beat Gay Shiek. Fulojoy, 'always prominent, .was a good fourth, and then came Shirley Dene, Happy Landing and Going Gay. Silver Ring Never Headed. Silver Ring made short work of the opposition in the Awapuni Cup. He went to the front at the outset and was never headed. Sporting Blood endeavoured' to take him on at the half-mile but could, not go-with him and dropped back a little. Silver Ring ran on well in the straight to win- by three lengths from Red Manfred, who beat Sporting Blood 'by a length. Hazoor was fourth arid Nightly Was last. Silver Ring is in great order for his trip to Australia, but Nightly’s form is very bad. Princess Doreen in Form. Coronilla began well in the Johnston Memorial and led to the straight slightly ahead of Cullus, with Souchong, Navaho, Royal Routine, Burnish and Cottesmore next c.nd Princess Doreen moving fast round the outer. Princess Doreen, galloping in her best style, ran on to Win by a length from Cottesmore, with Rereatu a head away third. Then came Midian, Coronilla, Navaho, Refresher and Arena. Rereatu came from the rear and is due soon. • Knockout Beats Sunee.

There was a remarkably fine spread of betting on the Te Matai Handicap, which Knockout won in a fine finish from Sunee, Confiscation and Darecourt, all of whom Were close" up. Darecourt was the unlucky ' runner. Tupurangi finished on fast from the back and Onewhetu ran a fair race. MANAWATU TROTTING. ■ HANDICAPS .FOR FIRST DAY.
